Genshin Impact has its core mechanics, but it’s almost unrecognizable after most gacha games. Most gacha games have turn-based battles and hand-off auto-battles that throw characters. This is a fully 3D open world RPG with fast paced action RPG combat. At first glance, it looks like a JRPG Tales of Zestilia.. But instead of the typical half-dozen party members you meet along the way, there are many more ways here. Some are recruited for the entire main story, but you can also expand your party from unlocked characters in the gacha system, or exchange controls between characters during battle.
And there is the influence of Breath of the Wild. Genshin Impact has a high aesthetic similarity and allows you to climb and slide around the world. It’s a lot more open than a regular JRPG, but you can’t play it like Zelda. Breath of the Wild’s emergent gameplay is a bit needed as an inspiration for an elemental combo system that combines spells and attacks from you and your party members to create new effects.
Make your time at Genshin Impact feel like playing an MMORPG. It’s packed with the types of side activities you’d expect from an MMO, including cooking, item hunts, world puzzles, daily challenge rotations, and level-ups beyond character levels. It’s also packed with systems designed to help you spend money and play for long periods of time. Imagine a combination of MMO and mobile gacha games here. It’s no surprise that the number of currencies, materials, and items to unlock and upgrade your character is dizzying. There are many — grinder dreams.
