“Hello. My name is Larry. Larry Laffer:“ It was with this greeting that the most legendary bachelor started the world of video games 34 years ago. It was on July 5, 1987 when I was with Leisure suit Larry in the land of the living room lizards the iconic adventure series celebrated its birth.
The main person in charge of the game is Al Lowe, a true all-rounder, game designer and prankster. As a passionate saxophonist, it was he who provided the catchy melody of the first part, which is probably still whistled by old fans today.
At the time, Leisure Suit Larry was considered an absolute scandal due to his sexual innuendo. The slippery fun was also underlined by a graphical display (at the time still with the best 16-color EGA graphics, if I had a color monitor), which at the time featured an indecent number of flesh-colored pixels. Unheard!
The slightly disreputable adventure, which somehow didn’t show anything in the end, won out over a lot of players. So several follow-up titles came out over the years, with parts 1-7 through 1996 (a Leisure Suit Larry 4 has not been released) remained the biggest, as Al Lowe was significantly involved. There were some nasty slip-ups later when the franchise changed hands multiple times and dubious revival attempts were made.
Fortunately, starting in 2013 this changed again with a nice new edit of the first part under Replay Games. In 2018, Assemble Entertainment took over, bringing Larry back to life (and really putting in the effort) through a successful Kickstarter campaign. Two new Larry games have arrived Leisure Suit Larry: Wet Dreams Don’t Dry Y Larry Leisure Suit: Wet Dreams Dry Twice.
