Google and Facebook on Monday unveiled their plans to install a new submarine telecommunications cable connecting Singapore, Japan, Guam, the Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia.

Called “Apricot” (apricot), this 12,000 km cable should be operational by 2024 if authorities give the necessary approvals, the two Californian groups said in press releases.

“The Apricot cable is part of our efforts to expand global networks and better serve the more than 3.5 billion people who use our applications each month,” said Nico Roehrich, director of engineering for Facebook, which also includes Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.

In March, the two Silicon Valley neighbors had already introduced another digital data transit cable, called Echo, which connects North America with Singapore and Indonesia.

“The Echo and Apricot cables are complementary subsea systems that … will provide much better resilience for Google Cloud and digital services,” said Bikash Koley, vice president of Google Cloud, a remote computing business division of the search giant. online. .

“Together, they will provide businesses and start-ups in Asia with more responsive connections, more bandwidth and stability between Southeast Asia, North Asia and the United States.”

This year, Google and Facebook ended a submarine cable project that would have linked California and Hong Kong, amid tensions between the United States and China.

The US Department of Justice recommended last year that this cable avoid Hong Kong.
