Greenpeace sues Volkswagen for environmental damage

Date:

Two directors of the environmental group Greenpeace, along with a climate activist, have filed a lawsuit in Braunschweig against the German automotive group Volkswagen, alleging that the automaker is not promoting climate protection.

The plaintiffs allege that the carbon dioxide emissions emitted by Volkswagen contribute significantly to the climate crisis and its effects. They argue that the automaker’s business model is incompatible with the goal of limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees.

The plaintiffs allege, among other things, that Volkswagen should stop selling cars with internal combustion engines worldwide by 2030.

If this lawsuit is successful, it will emit two less gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2040 than Volkswagen’s current plans, the plaintiffs explain.

Volkswagen does not comment on the matter at this time, but the company has previously said that it wants to become a carbon-neutral automaker by 2050 at the latest.
