Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct edition was packed with all sorts of highlights (here is an overview). One of these highlights made retro fans’ hearts beat faster: some Nintendo 64 Classics are coming to Nintendo Switch both this year and next in the format of the Nintendo Switch Online service (we inform). Many argue that you can only play 3DS Virtual Console games, but that’s not really feasible. [Pokémon] Stadium reads and accesses saved data through the Transfer Pak and has frequent connections to it. Of [Nintendo] 3DS can’t do that with Nintendo Switch. You need a constant connection.
theoretically can you set up a system? and take care of save data, but that would be a lot of work and probably won’t show up on time, as these games probably won’t be released until AFTER the Nintendo 3DS eShop closes for new software downloads in March.
The next argument is Pokémon HOME. Many have suggested that HOME now stores different structures and that it would be possible, but that would require converting each Pokemon again to accommodate the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon format. Last time it took days.
In addition, (Pokémon HOME) must interact with the NSO save file, which contains more and more games. I’m not entirely sure how the connection between Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon HOME would work, since the HOME servers are not from Nintendo. That would require a lot of reworking.
If the Game Boy ever makes it to NSO and Pokemon titles are added, they may find a way around this and access the save data, but until then, that’s it. literally impossible.
