Independent game developer ambedo studios has announced Remaining Grace, an emotional narrative adventure that explores grief, relationships, and the connections people leave behind. The non-linear ghost story is set to launch on PC and Mac through Steam, with players getting their first hands-on opportunity at PAX West 2026.
The debut project from ambedo studios was created by Quintin Pan, the lead designer of Dreamfall Chapters. The game focuses on the quiet moments that shape human relationships, telling a deeply personal story through the perspectives of those connected to Grace Tao.
A Ghost Story Told Through Memories and Relationships
Players Uncover Grace Tao’s Story Across Three Timelines
Remaining Grace follows the untold story of Grace Tao, a woman who died three years before the events of the game. Rather than presenting a traditional linear narrative, the game pieces together her life through the experiences of the people she left behind.
Players will explore the interconnected lives of Grace’s family, friends, and loved ones while uncovering the mystery surrounding her death across three different time periods.
The story examines themes of chosen family, identity, and the complicated relationships that define people’s lives. Through multiple perspectives, the game presents a layered narrative focused on the emotional impact one person can have on others.
A Unique Spirit-Based Gameplay Experience
Grace’s Ghost Moves Through the People She Knew
In Remaining Grace, the spirit of Grace Tao has the ability to shift between different bodies through physical contact. Players guide her ghost through a network of relationships, experiencing the world from the viewpoints of those closest to her.
The characters connected to Grace include her Chinese immigrant parents, her adopted sister, the father of her child, her father’s new wife, and a childhood best friend who continues to struggle with her loss.
The game allows players to explore locations such as parks, tea houses, and Grace’s childhood home while discovering the emotional stories hidden within each relationship.
An Alternate Vision of North America
Turtle Island Reimagines History Through a Different Cultural Lens
Remaining Grace takes place in Turtle Island, an alternate-history version of North America presented through a hand-drawn pencil sketch art style.
In this fictional timeline, Christopher Columbus failed in his westward expedition, resulting in a different cultural development of the continent. The game imagines a multicultural society where Indigenous communities and diaspora populations exist under a different set of historical and social circumstances.
The alternate setting provides the foundation for exploring questions surrounding culture, identity, race, gender, faith, and belonging.
Developer Aims for an Honest Exploration of Human Experiences
Ambedo Studios Builds a Story Around Identity and Connection
“Our goal is to create an intimate, raw, and honest exploration of complex lived experiences, and use an alternate-history setting to ask pointed and provocative questions,” said Quintin Pan, Creative Director at ambedo studios.
“Remaining Grace is the culmination of our immigrant stories, our Indigenous stories, our wrestlings with faith, race, gender, and culture all into a complex non-linear narrative tapestry for the player to unfold,” Pan added.
The developer says the project draws from personal experiences and broader discussions around culture and identity, shaping the game’s focus on relationships and human connection.
Remaining Grace Coming to PC and Mac
Remaining Grace will launch on PC and Mac through Steam. Players attending PAX West 2026 will be able to try a hands-on demo of the game through the PAX Rising booth.
With its combination of supernatural storytelling, emotional exploration, and alternate-history world-building, Remaining Grace aims to offer a different kind of adventure focused less on traditional action and more on the relationships that define a life.
