Sword & Shield Simulator has launched for PC through Steam Early Access, giving players a medieval blacksmithing experience that combines weapon crafting, resource gathering, exploration, trading, and story-driven quests. The game became available on August 11, 2026, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions planned for a later release.
Medieval Blacksmith Simulator Combines Crafting and Exploration
Developed by Polish studio Wildlands Interactive, Sword & Shield Simulator is co-published by the developer and Ultimate Games S.A. The game places players in the role of a medieval blacksmith responsible for turning materials recovered from the surrounding world into weapons, shields, and armor.
Rather than keeping players entirely inside a workshop, the simulator incorporates exploration and adventure mechanics. Players can travel to battlefields to search for scrap and other useful resources before returning to their smithy to transform those materials into finished equipment.
Weapons and Shields Are Built Piece by Piece
Blacksmithing is one of the central systems in Sword & Shield Simulator. Players work with equipment such as an anvil, furnace, grindstone, chisel, and flux as they produce different items.
Weapons are constructed using individual components. A sword, for example, can be assembled from separate elements such as the blade, hilt, and guard. Shields are similarly created piece by piece, adding a more detailed crafting process to the traditional simulation formula.
The game also expands resource gathering beyond battlefield scavenging. Players can cut down trees, hunt animals, and mine materials needed for crafting and progression.
Several activities are presented through mini-games, including lockpicking, crossbow shooting, and cart repair. These systems are designed to provide additional variety as players travel between the game’s regions and complete objectives.
Smithy Management and Trading Drive Progression
Operating the blacksmith shop is another major part of the experience. Players must manage their smithy while trading the weapons, armor, and other items they produce.
Progress is tied to an experience and skill system, allowing players to improve their abilities as they complete activities and advance through the game.
Beyond crafting and business management, Sword & Shield Simulator includes multiple large regions populated with residents who have their own stories. The broader narrative features local intrigue and secrets connected to the kingdom, providing a story framework for the game’s missions and exploration.
Early Access Includes Three Regions and More Than 140 Story Missions
At its Early Access launch, Sword & Shield Simulator features three regions: Danburg, Bloodlands, and Grainmill.
Players have access to more than 140 story missions, along with numerous additional tasks. The combination of quests, resource gathering, crafting, and smithy management forms the foundation of the current Early Access version.
The developers expect the Early Access period to last up to approximately six months, during which additional features and content are scheduled to be introduced.
Talstein Region and Expanded Gameplay Planned
One of the largest planned additions is Talstein, a new region that will introduce more missions and locations to explore.
Future updates are also expected to expand blacksmithing and resource-related mechanics. Planned improvements include additional options for the materials system, as well as further development of mining and hunting.
Wildlands Interactive also plans to consider community feedback throughout Early Access, potentially allowing player experiences to influence adjustments and improvements before the full release.
