The End of Allegoria Targets 2027 Release With Tactical RPG Combat and Nintendo Switch 2 Version

Date:

The End of Allegoria, a sequel to the retro-inspired role-playing game The Edge of Allegoria, is officially in development for a planned 2027 release. Button Factory Games and Munich-based indie publisher CobraTekku Games announced the project ahead of Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, where attendees will be among the first to experience the new title.

The sequel will bring the world of Allegoria back with an expanded tactical RPG system, a larger open world and more than 50 character classes. The game is being developed for PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

The End of Allegoria Continues the Story Years Later

Set many years after the events of The Edge of Allegoria, the sequel begins after decades of relative stability and peace.

That calm ends when the Wasteland deity plunges the world into chaos. Humanity suddenly develops supernatural abilities, dramatically changing life throughout Allegoria. According to the developers, much of society responds with vengeance and violence, sending the world into anarchy.

Players will follow several characters as they travel through increasingly apocalyptic environments, battle enemies and attempt to prevent the destruction of Allegoria.

The darker storyline builds on the setting established by the first game, a Canadian-developed JRPG inspired by the visual style and design conventions of the Game Boy era.

Tactical RPG Combat Expands the Original Formula

One of the biggest changes in The End of Allegoria is the introduction of party-based tactical combat.

Rather than simply reproducing the systems of its predecessor, the sequel expands the existing Mastery System and combines it with new tactical mechanics. Players will be able to assemble parties and develop characters through a substantially larger class system.

More Than 50 Classes Across Three Tiers

The new class system includes more than 50 classes divided across three tiers, providing a wide range of options for character development and party composition.

The developers say the expanded system is intended to give players greater freedom to experiment with different combinations and build distinctive character setups.

Monsters and magic remain central to the experience, but the tactical approach adds another layer of strategy to encounters throughout the game.

Open World Features More Than 300 New Levels

Exploration will also receive a major expansion.

The End of Allegoria features more than 300 new levels spread throughout its open world. Players who experienced the original game will encounter recognizable locations and routes, but those areas have been visually redesigned, rebuilt and connected for the sequel.

The world will include dungeons, hidden secrets and potential teammates to discover.

Developers also describe the environment as changing over time, creating new situations as players progress and make decisions that influence the fate of Allegoria.

Familiar Locations Return With Major Changes

While the sequel maintains a connection to the first game’s geography, time has significantly altered the world.

Returning locations are designed to feel familiar without simply duplicating their previous appearances. The rebuilt areas, additional paths and expanded environments are intended to support the sequel’s broader approach to exploration.

That balance between recognizable retro influences and larger modern systems is central to the project’s design.

Gamescom Attendees Get an Early Look

The announcement comes as the gaming industry gathers for Gamescom in Cologne. Visitors will be able to get an early look at The End of Allegoria beginning Aug. 26.

The Gamescom appearance gives players an opportunity to see how Button Factory Games is evolving the formula established by The Edge of Allegoria well ahead of the planned 2027 launch.

A teaser has also been released to introduce the sequel’s setting and direction.

Button Factory Games Builds on Its Game Boy-Inspired RPG

Button Factory Games was founded in 2021 by Joe Picknell, a pixel artist, video game composer and developer. The studio previously created The Edge of Allegoria as a tribute to JRPGs from the Game Boy era.

CobraTekku Games, founded in 2022 and based in Munich, is serving as the indie publisher for the new title.

With its planned 2027 release, The End of Allegoria aims to significantly expand its predecessor’s retro RPG foundation. More than 300 new levels, dozens of character classes, tactical party combat and a darker storyline position the sequel as a larger interpretation of the original game’s pixel-art world for PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
