Nightmare Circus, an upcoming action-adventure game from FairPlay Studios and Red Dunes Games, is being showcased at Tokyo Game Show 2026 ahead of its planned 2027 release. The surreal title combines fast-paced combat, exploration, puzzles and platforming with a physics-based system that lets players manipulate enemies and use the environment as a weapon.
The game is appearing at Tokyo Game Show, held Sept. 17-21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Players who cannot attend the event can currently try a free demo on Steam.
Nightmare Circus Traps Players in a Surreal Nightmare Realm
In Nightmare Circus, players take control of a puppeteer trapped inside a mysterious nightmare world. The protagonist must search for fellow circus performers while navigating unusual environments populated by monsters, puzzles and other challenges.
Progression combines traditional action-adventure exploration with platforming and environmental problem-solving. Players can use the protagonist’s abilities both during battles and while searching for new routes through the Nightmare Realm.
The central objective is to rescue the missing performers while uncovering the secrets behind the strange world in which the puppeteer has become trapped.
Physics System Lets Players Manipulate Enemies
Combat is built around a physics-driven system that gives players several ways to control opponents rather than relying exclusively on conventional attacks.
The puppeteer can wield strings and hooks to wrap, link, pull and otherwise manipulate enemies. These abilities can be used to reposition opponents or turn groups of enemies against one another during encounters.
The surrounding environment also plays a role in combat. Players can slam enemies into nearby objects and other parts of the world, making positioning an important component of each fight.
That approach gives Nightmare Circus a combat system centered on interaction between characters, physics and environmental objects.
Three Attack Styles Create Different Combat Options
Alongside its string mechanics, Nightmare Circus includes three primary attack styles.
Light attacks emphasize speed, medium attacks provide additional reach, and heavy attacks deliver more powerful strikes. Players can switch between the three styles and combine them to create attack sequences suited to different enemies and situations.
The system is designed to encourage players to move between conventional strikes and physics-based abilities. Strings and hooks can create openings, while combinations of light, medium and heavy attacks provide direct damage.
Players can also crash enemies into one another, adding another tactical option when facing groups.
Abilities Also Open New Paths
The puppeteer’s abilities extend beyond combat. Players will need to use them to overcome obstacles and discover additional routes while exploring the Nightmare Realm.
That connection between traversal and combat means the same mechanics used against monsters may also play a role in environmental puzzles and progression.
Exploration is tied to the larger effort to locate the protagonist’s missing friends, with new areas providing additional clues about the Nightmare Realm and its inhabitants.
Free Nightmare Circus Demo Available on Steam
Tokyo Game Show attendees can see Nightmare Circus during the five-day gaming event in Japan. For PC players elsewhere, including those in the United States, a free Steam demo offers an opportunity to experience the game’s mechanics before launch.
The demo provides an early introduction to the combination of combat, physics manipulation and exploration that will form the foundation of the full game.
Nightmare Circus is currently scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox. A specific release date has not yet been announced.
With its puppeteer protagonist, surreal circus setting and emphasis on physically manipulating enemies and environments, Nightmare Circus is taking a distinctive approach to action-adventure combat. Its Tokyo Game Show appearance and Steam demo provide an early look at those systems ahead of the game’s planned 2027 debut.
