Penguin Colony Brings Antarctic Cosmic Horror to PC on October 16

Date:

Penguin Colony, a new cosmic horror game from Umurangi Generation creator Tali Faulkner, will launch for PC via Steam on Oct. 16, 2026, publisher Fellow Traveller and developer ORIGAME DIGITAL announced. Versions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 are scheduled to follow in 2027.

Set in Antarctica in 1939, the game combines exploration, mystery and psychological horror with an unusual protagonist: a penguin caught between two human expeditions and a potentially ancient threat buried beneath the ice.

Penguin Colony Sets New October 16 Release Date

The newly announced date moves Penguin Colony toward an October PC release, with the console editions planned for next year.

The story follows two rival groups that have traveled to Antarctica. One is a Nazi expedition searching for evidence of an ancient power that it believes could support its ideology of racial superiority. The other is a Kaitiaki mission attempting to stop the expedition and return whatever exists beneath the Antarctic ice to its dormant state.

Players experience the unfolding conflict from an unconventional perspective. Rather than controlling one of the human explorers, they inhabit penguins living in the region.

Players Explore Antarctica Through Different Penguins

Each Penguin Has Different Abilities and Limitations

Throughout Penguin Colony, players can inhabit different penguins, each possessing its own capabilities and restrictions.

Movement across the Antarctic environment includes waddling over ice, sliding down slopes and diving beneath the water. Penguins can also squeeze through areas that are inaccessible to humans, allowing players to observe the rival groups and uncover information from perspectives unavailable to the expeditions themselves.

Exploration is central to piecing together what is happening beneath the ice and understanding the increasingly strange events surrounding the two groups.

Cosmic Horror Draws Inspiration From Lovecraft and The Thing

The developers cite H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness and John Carpenter’s The Thing as inspirations for the game’s Antarctic horror setting.

Rather than providing straightforward explanations for every discovery, Penguin Colony is designed around ambiguity and interpretation. Players are expected to closely examine their surroundings, consider the evidence they uncover and reach their own conclusions about what is happening.

The approach draws from older styles of horror game design in which experimentation and uncertainty play significant roles in the experience.

Insight System Changes What Players Can Perceive

One of the game’s central mechanics is an Insight system that can change what players are capable of perceiving.

As players explore Antarctica, their ability to notice or understand certain elements of the environment may shift. The mechanic is intended to make discoveries less predictable and encourage players to reconsider areas and events as their perception changes.

Hidden discoveries are also spread throughout the environment, with some mysteries designed so they may not become clear during a first playthrough.

Mysteries Designed to Encourage Player Discussion

ORIGAME DIGITAL is building the game’s mysteries around interpretation rather than providing a single immediate explanation for every event.

Players may discover different pieces of information depending on how they explore and interact with the game’s systems. The developers expect this structure to encourage players to compare discoveries and theories as the broader mystery develops.

That approach could make community discussion an important part of understanding some of the game’s more obscure events, particularly when individual players encounter different clues or interpretations.

Console Versions Planned for 2027

Penguin Colony will first arrive on PC via Steam on Oct. 16, 2026. Versions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 are expected in 2027, though specific console release dates have not yet been announced.

By combining penguin-based exploration with a 1939 Antarctic setting, rival expeditions and cosmic horror, Penguin Colony takes an unconventional approach to the genre. Its focus on perception, environmental clues and unresolved mysteries will form the core of the experience when the game arrives on PC this October.
