French independent developer Falling Leaves Studio is preparing to release MyDear.exe, a short narrative game that blends retro computer nostalgia, puzzles and nonlinear exploration with a story centered on a couple’s 57-year relationship. The game is scheduled to launch November 2, 2026, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
MyDear.exe Turns an Old PC Into a Love Story
Based in Bordeaux, France, Falling Leaves Studio describes MyDear.exe as an “Interactive Love Letter.” It will be the studio’s first game and follows an earlier appearance during the InterfaceX26 showcase.
The project is being developed by former members of the team behind The Rogue Prince of Persia, including its former Game Director and Producer.
Rather than placing players in a traditional game world, MyDear.exe unfolds through the folders and files of a fictional old computer. Its interface draws inspiration from the Windows XP era, using the familiar look of early-2000s desktop computing as the setting for its narrative.
Players take the role of Ellie as she explores a game created by Lucien as a tribute to their long life together.
A ‘Foldervania’ Built Around Memories
Falling Leaves Studio calls the concept a “Foldervania,” combining the nonlinear exploration associated with classic Metroidvania games with navigation through a simulated computer operating system.
The story focuses on Ellie and Lucien, a couple who have loved each other for 57 years. As Ellie explores the computer, players uncover souvenirs, photographs, letters and personal notes that reveal more about their relationship.
Lucien has also prepared puzzles for Ellie to solve, turning the computer’s files and memories into an interactive journey through their shared past.
The developers estimate the full experience will take about two hours to complete, with humor, memories and romance forming the core of the story.
Puzzles, Retro Mini-Games and a Fake Operating System
MyDear.exe includes a collection of mini-games inspired by its characters as well as classic retro games. These smaller activities are integrated into the broader exploration of the fictional computer.
Puzzles are another major part of the experience. Players encounter passwords throughout the game, with different mechanisms used to decrypt them and unlock additional content.
The simulated operating system has been designed to resemble an older PC environment while remaining accessible to players who may not be familiar with computers from that era.
Fully Voiced Interactions Between Ellie and Lucien
The game also features full voice acting. Ellie reacts to the game Lucien created while he remains by her side, allowing their conversations and interactions to provide additional insight into their personalities and relationship.
According to the studio, the combination of voice performances, photographs, letters, notes and other keepsakes is intended to gradually tell the couple’s story rather than relying on conventional exposition.
MyDear.exe Demo Already Available on Steam
A playable demo of MyDear.exe is currently available on Steam ahead of the November launch. Falling Leaves Studio said the demo had received 100% positive user reviews at the time of its October 1 announcement.
The demo gives players an early look at the game’s unusual desktop-based structure, narrative approach and puzzle mechanics before the full version arrives.
For reviewers and content creators, the developer is also making Steam review keys available by request ahead of release.
