The viral digging game that turned a simple backyard excavation into a surprise hit is expanding with multiplayer. A Game About Digging A Hole Together is set to arrive later in 2026, adding cooperative play for up to four players alongside new terrain, tools, hidden items and underground secrets.
Indie publisher rokaplay and developer Mipumi Games announced the new title on September 30. It will be released on PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC, as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
A Game About Digging A Hole Together Builds on Viral Success
The new game follows the unexpected success of A Game About Digging a Hole, which began as a vacation project created by a single developer in only a few weeks.
Despite its modest origins, the game gained widespread attention on social media, reached the top 30 on the Steam charts and sold more than 1 million copies.
Its straightforward gameplay loop — dig, sell, upgrade and continue digging — helped turn the small-scale project into a multiplatform success.
A Game About Digging A Hole Together retains that basic formula while expanding nearly every part of the experience.
Up to Four Players Can Dig Together
Multiplayer is the biggest addition to the follow-up. Players can bring up to three friends into the game, allowing groups of four to explore a new plot of land together.
The developers are positioning cooperative digging as a digital version of a familiar childhood activity: gathering with friends and seeing just how deep a hole can become.
Along with multiplayer, players can expect more underground depth, additional terrain types, new tools, secrets and discoveries.
The core mechanics remain designed to be easy to understand. Players dig into the ground, sell what they uncover, invest their earnings into upgrades and then return underground to continue their excavation.
Mipumi Games Rebuilt the Game’s Code
Development of the expanded title goes beyond simply adding multiplayer.
Over the past several months, Mipumi Games has rebuilt the game’s code with the goal of improving performance, reliability and the overall experience.
The Vienna-based studio has experience working across both independent and major video game productions. Its previous credits include work on Alan Wake 2, CONTROL, HITMAN and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
The original developer is also continuing to work on the project alongside the broader Mipumi Games team.
Community Feedback Is Shaping the New Game
Following the original game’s unexpected popularity, the development team examined player reviews, comments and requests to determine how the concept could be expanded.
That community feedback has been incorporated into A Game About Digging A Hole Together, with multiplayer emerging as one of the defining additions.
The developers are also expanding the amount of content players can discover underground, giving groups more reasons to keep digging after mastering the basic mechanics.
Digging Technology Has Roots in Solarpunk
The technology behind the digging and voxel systems has an unusual history.
According to the developers, the technology originated in an early version of Solarpunk before ultimately being used as the foundation for A Game About Digging a Hole.
That system now returns in the multiplayer follow-up, supporting the expanded terrain and deeper excavation mechanics planned for the new release.
New Game Expands a Simple Digging Formula
While the original game’s appeal was built around simplicity, the follow-up is designed to offer more variety without abandoning that accessible foundation.
Players will receive a new plot of land and a new premise while searching underground for hidden items and secrets. New terrain types and tools are intended to add variety as groups descend farther below the surface.
The cooperative structure also changes how players can approach excavation, turning what was largely an individual activity into a shared experience with friends.
A Game About Digging A Hole Together is scheduled for release later in 2026 on Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. A specific launch date has not yet been announced.
