Android 12 and Material You: A major update is rolling out to the Google Translate widget (screenshot)

with the start of android 12 Google has not only given a new look to many app interfaces and the operating system, but also updated some home screen widgets in the direction of Material You. After a slightly longer break, it is now the turn of the next widget, with which many handy translation features should be accessible from the home screen: Google Translate has a significantly larger widget.

Google Translate has had its own home screen widget for many years, but until now it was just a 1×1 grid and could call up a previously saved translation pair. Practical, but there is more. There is now an update that brings the widget to its full width and provides additional functionality on two lines. The focus remains on calling a selected language pair and some additional features follow below.

A tap on the language pair opens the translator. With a tap on the symbol next to it, the text on the clipboard is sent directly through the translator. In the row below, there are shortcuts to voice translation, conversation translation, voice transcription, and photo translation. Unfortunately, this all happens in the app, so the widget only serves as a shortcut. Therefore, a quick translation on the home screen is not yet possible.

The new widget should roll out to all users in the next few days via an update to the Google Translate app.
