The operating system Android it’s becoming more modular, so more and more apps are being pulled from the system and brought into the Play Store, which has some advantages. Google has just released a new app that is pre-installed on all smartphones and can be updated via the Play Store: Google Wi-Fi Provisioner manages Wi-Fi connections.

Android’s increasingly modular structure makes it easy to swap out a number of system components at the app level and update them through the Google Play Store. Where previously an extensive update of the operating system was necessary, then an implementation via the Play Store is sufficient. This has been implemented for many apps in recent years and now there is another one that has been available on the Google Play Store for a few days now.

The new app is the app. Google Wi-Fi Provisioner, whose actual task remains largely obscure, but sounds quite interesting from the name alone. The app is now released in version 1.2.480746471 which is the first publicly available variant and also has some higher minor versions than the pre-installed variant on Pixel 7 smartphones. This means there must have been minor changes.

Of course, such an application is not designed for end users, but performs its task only at the system level. This is already evident by the fact that there is no reasonable description of the app, no logo, and no meaningful screenshots. Everything is very rudimentary or provided with placeholders. Just look at the screenshot below.

The description of the app is very short, but it is also available in German. Now you could expect this app to manage saved Wifi credentials or it can also fetch list of public networks from Google servers. However, this can neither be confirmed nor denied, because the functionality remains unclear despite the description. However, it seems to be an app where timely updates can have an advantage.

Perhaps the possible changelogs will tell us a bit more in the future and the frequency of updates can sometimes give insights into what’s going on in the background. For a newly released and not even described app, over a billion installs is certainly not bad 😉
