Clowntown Launches on Steam in January 2027 With Chaotic Co-Op Minigames for Up to Eight Players

Date:

Clowntown, a comedy-focused multiplayer party game from 30XX developer Batterystaple Games, is scheduled to launch on PC through Steam in January 2027. Announced during The MIX Fall Games Showcase on October 16, 2026, the game combines cooperative challenges, competitive minigames, and unpredictable gameplay twists for groups of two to eight players.

Developed by Seattle-based Batterystaple Games, Clowntown features a five- to six-hour campaign built around increasingly complicated minigames, with players working together—or competing against one another—to overcome the Ringmaster’s challenges.

Clowntown Brings Cooperative Chaos to Steam in January 2027

Unlike traditional multiplayer party games that focus primarily on short, standalone competitions, Clowntown introduces a structured campaign featuring interconnected, hand-designed challenges.

Players must navigate the Ringmaster’s elaborate plans while completing minigames that become progressively more demanding.

Each challenge begins with relatively straightforward mechanics before introducing unexpected changes that require communication, coordination, and quick reactions.

The game’s cooperative structure also leaves room for competitive situations, creating opportunities for friendly rivalries and unexpected outcomes.

A Five- to Six-Hour Campaign With Escalating Challenges

The campaign is designed to last approximately five to six hours, offering a sequence of multistage minigames.

Rather than repeating the same objectives, challenges evolve throughout each stage, introducing additional mechanics and increasingly unusual rules.

Players must adapt to changing conditions while coordinating with teammates.

The developers describe the experience as mostly cooperative, reflecting the occasional shift toward direct competition between participants.

Minigames Combine Word Puzzles, Trivia, and Competitive Challenges

Clowntown includes a collection of minigames designed around different skills, ranging from spelling and general knowledge to platforming and player-versus-player competition.

Several challenges begin with familiar concepts before developing into more complicated variations.

Spelling Bee, Spelling Wasp, and Bees Spelling

In Spelling Bee, players work together to spell simple words by selecting letters one at a time.

The challenge becomes more difficult in Spelling Wasp, which introduces complex words such as “polytetrafluoroethylene” under time pressure.

The final variation, Bees Spelling, adds clown-launching cannons and requires players to collect bees to complete spelling objectives.

These evolving mechanics illustrate the game’s emphasis on transforming simple activities into increasingly chaotic multiplayer scenarios.

Friendship Test and Trivia Challenge Players’ Knowledge

Friendship Test asks players to answer questions about their teammates, including seemingly simple topics such as favorite fruits.

Possible answers can include unexpected choices, such as mustard alongside more conventional options.

In Trivia, players face unusual questions that test their awareness of the game and other participants.

One example asks players to identify which character is about to die, introducing an unpredictable element to the question-and-answer format.

Competitive Minigames Introduce PvP Action

Although cooperation forms the foundation of Clowntown, several minigames encourage players to compete directly.

In Fall Clowns, participants must survive on a platform made of deteriorating blocks, with the last remaining player winning.

Charging Slammers challenges players to use powerful jumps to reach the center of the stage.

Meanwhile, Turf War and Turf 2 Turf involve covering terrain and other players with paint.

Additional challenges include Thou Shalt Not, a platforming course that requires participants to follow restrictive rules, and THIS IS SPARTA!, which involves kicking opponents into wells.

Patch Notes When Adds Custom Gameplay Modifiers

Players can further customize their experience through Patch Notes When, a minigame featuring modifiers that alter gameplay behavior.

One example allows players to make their clown horns significantly more irritating, adding another layer of comedy to multiplayer sessions.

These modifiers are intended to introduce unexpected complications and change how participants interact during challenges.

Clowntown Features Three Multiplayer Modes and Character Customization

Batterystaple Games has confirmed three primary gameplay modes.

Party Mode allows players to revisit individual minigames, while Co-Op Mode provides curated collections of cooperative challenges.

Contest Mode changes the rules of cooperative activities to introduce competitive elements.

Players can also customize their clown characters with different costumes and visual styles.

More Than 30 Horn Sounds Available

Character customization extends to the game’s sound effects, with more than 30 horn variations available.

The horns cannot be muted, making them a persistent part of the multiplayer experience.

This feature reflects the game’s emphasis on exaggerated comedy and playful interactions between participants.

Batterystaple Games Discusses the Inspiration Behind Clowntown

Batterystaple Games, previously known for the action-platforming title 30XX, is taking a different creative direction with its upcoming multiplayer release.

The studio’s founder, Chris King, said the development process focused on creating entertaining experiences that the team itself enjoyed.

“It’s been a joy to make a game that’s just ‘everything that made the team laugh,’” says Batterystaple founder, Chris King. “Hopefully, you have one to seven friends to bring along for the ride – with a little luck, you’ll still have most of them left by the time the credits roll.”

The shift from action platforming to multiplayer party gameplay represents a notable change for the studio.

Clowntown Release Date and Supported Languages

Clowntown is scheduled to release on PC through Steam in January 2027. A specific launch date has not yet been announced.

The game will support English, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Spanish, and Portuguese at launch.

Players can follow Batterystaple Games on Bluesky and X for additional announcements.

A New Multiplayer Party Game From the Creators of 30XX

With support for up to eight players, an extended campaign, and a combination of cooperative and competitive minigames, Clowntown expands Batterystaple Games’ portfolio into the multiplayer party genre.

Its evolving challenges, character customization, and multiple gameplay modes are designed to support both structured group sessions and shorter competitive experiences.

The game is expected to arrive on Steam in January 2027, with further release details anticipated ahead of launch.
