A new indie horror puzzle game inspired by Cold War–era paranoia and retro pixel art is heading to major gaming platforms later this year. Publisher Numskull Games and developer Smitner Studio announced that Hazard Pay will launch in June 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
Players can already try the game through a playable demo available now on Steam, offering an early look at the unsettling world and mechanics behind the title.
A Cold War–Inspired Horror Story
Set in 1982 during the height of Cold War tensions, Hazard Pay places players inside a secretive government research facility in an authoritarian state. The story centers on a containment breach that has turned a classified laboratory into a deadly environment filled with biological threats.
Players assume the role of a government cleanup specialist sent to contain the disaster. The assignment appears straightforward: eliminate evidence, restore order inside the facility, and collect the promised “hazard pay.”
But once inside the complex, the mission becomes far more complicated.
The facility’s experiments—and the government’s attempt to hide them—begin to unravel, revealing disturbing truths about the research being conducted.
The Experiments That Went Wrong
The events unfold inside the Institut für Proteintherapie (IPT), a research program originally designed to address a national food shortage by synthesizing artificial proteins.
Instead, the project spiraled into a biological nightmare.
Scientists working inside the facility accidentally created dangerous organisms that now roam the corridors and laboratories. Players must explore areas such as dormitories, testing chambers, and research labs while encountering the horrifying outcomes of those experiments.
Among the creatures inside the complex are two particularly dangerous threats:
PRS-86
A blind predator that hunts by tracking blood. Even small traces can attract the creature, forcing players to carefully manage their movements and environment.
The Collector
An evolving organism that has grown beyond the control of its creators, adapting and spreading throughout the facility.
The government’s response is ruthless. Cleanup workers are treated as disposable assets—if one dies during the mission, another is sent in to replace them.
Gameplay Combines Puzzle Mechanics and Survival Horror
Hazard Pay blends several gameplay elements, including stealth, survival horror, and narrative decision-making. The core gameplay revolves around navigating the facility while solving environmental puzzles and avoiding hostile creatures.
Players must push and pull blocks through carefully designed levels to progress, a mechanic inspired by classic puzzle games but reimagined within a tense horror setting.
Key Gameplay Objectives
Players are tasked with:
- Navigating multiple sectors of the research facility
- Avoiding bio-engineered organisms that track players through sound and scent
- Deciding the fate of scientists trapped inside the facility
The game emphasizes environmental awareness and strategic movement. Blood trails, noise, and evidence left behind can attract predators or expose the truth behind the government’s operation.
A Story Shaped by Player Choices
Beyond its puzzle mechanics, Hazard Pay features branching narrative choices that influence how the story unfolds.
Players must decide whether to follow orders and suppress evidence or uncover the truth behind the failed experiments.
These choices affect alliances, character relationships, and the game’s possible endings.
Environmental storytelling also plays a major role, with documents, abandoned research notes, and hidden areas revealing more about the experiments and the government program behind them.
Key Features of Hazard Pay
The developers highlight several core elements of the game’s design:
Handcrafted Puzzle Levels
Compact, carefully designed stages built around push-and-pull mechanics.
Unique Cleanup Gameplay
Players erase blood trails, destroy evidence, and conceal what happened inside the facility.
Branching Narrative Paths
Player decisions shape alliances and determine multiple story outcomes.
Environmental Storytelling
Secrets about the research facility are uncovered through exploration.
Playable Demo Now Available
Gamers interested in trying the experience ahead of launch can access the opening section of Hazard Pay through a free demo currently available on Steam.
The demo introduces the infected research complex, core puzzle mechanics, and the early threats players will encounter inside the facility.
