Fast enough to game in 8K?

Fast enough to game in 8K?

of Maximilian Hohm
In his test, “The Tech Chap” focused on the performance of the Geforce RTX 4090 in 8K. The RTX 4090 is the first graphics card to deliver truly smooth gaming experiences with current titles at this resolution, although DLSS 3 is sometimes required for this. So, read more about The Tech Chaps review of the Geforce RTX 4090 below.

The first tests of the new Geforce RTX 4090 were published yesterday. In the PCGH test of the RTX 4090, Nvidia’s new flagship was able to impress with significantly improved efficiency and extremely high performance and is now recommended for gamers with 4K displays who want enjoy high frame rates at the same time, as the graphics card is sometimes strong for the following resolutions is limited by current processors. This begs the question of whether the RTX 4090 might not provide playable frame rates at even higher resolutions.

Nvidia itself had already named the Geforce RTX 3090 as the first 8K graphics card, but a smooth gaming experience was out of the question. This might be different with the Geforce RTX 4090, but due to the lack of available gaming monitors and low distribution among gamers, it’s still a niche feature that’s only been tested by a few tech outlets so far. One of them is the British channel “The Tech Chap”.

An entire high-end gaming setup was built here consisting of a Ryzen 9 7950X, an Asus ROG Maximus X670E Hero, 32 GiB DDR5-6,200, and the Samsung Neo QLED QN800B 8K TV. This system was then tested in 4K and 8K in modern games such as Cyberpunk 2077, MS Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5 and Overwatch 2. For comparison, Geforce RTX 3090 values were also shown, confirming a strong difference in favor of the RTX 4090.

At 8K, titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Flight Simulator could only really play smoothly with DLSS 3.0 at maximum details, but over 60 frames per second were achieved in both. The RTX 3090 hit an unplayable 28 frames per second in Cyberpunk and 46 frames per second in Flight Simulator when using DLSS 2.1. Fans of FPS games also seem to get their money’s worth from the RTX 4090, because at 8K, the RTX 4090 still manages 520 frames per second in Overwatch 2, while CoD Warzone still runs at 117 frames per second. This means that the RTX 4090 can actually be described as an 8K-capable graphics card, now only gaming-capable monitors at this resolution are missing.
