Fast-Paced Indie Dungeon Runner Blends Retro Fantasy and Arcade Combat
Independent publisher HYPERSTRANGE and developer Dread Night have announced that “Slaughter Void,” a fast-paced top-down action slasher inspired by classic fantasy and heavy metal culture, will launch on PC on June 3 via Steam and GOG.
The release date was unveiled during the Best Indie Games Showcase, with the game debuting alongside a week-long HYPERSTRANGE publisher sale on Steam featuring discounts on several indie titles.
Designed around lightning-fast combat and instant-death mechanics, “Slaughter Void” combines retro-inspired pixel art visuals with arcade-style dungeon gameplay that emphasizes speed, aggression and high-score chasing.
One-Hit Combat Drives High-Speed Gameplay
At the center of “Slaughter Void” is a high-risk combat system where both enemies and players can die in a single hit. The mechanic pushes players to maintain momentum through rapid attacks and chained combo kills.
According to the developers, players who build enough speed through consecutive eliminations can temporarily avoid instant death, though taking damage will break momentum and slow down their run.
The game’s design draws heavily from fantasy paperback artwork of the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the visual energy of heavy metal album covers and classic arcade action titles.
The result is a fast-moving dungeon crawler built around reflexes, quick decision-making and relentless combat.
Retro Fantasy Worlds and Upgradeable Weapons
“Slaughter Void” features 36 handcrafted levels filled with demonic enemies, psychedelic environments and loot-based progression systems.
Players can collect “meat scraps” dropped by defeated enemies and use them to customize their builds with weapons and upgrades that significantly alter gameplay styles.
Among the weapons highlighted by the developers are:
Arsi Scythe
A weapon capable of reflecting projectiles back toward enemies, encouraging aggressive close-range combat and counterattacks.
Hammer of Wandering Souls
A heavy weapon designed for breaking through barriers and clearing paths through enemy-filled environments.
As players progress through runs, they can unlock additional perks and upgrades that increase the intensity and speed of combat while creating new build combinations for replayability.
HYPERSTRANGE Expands Indie Publishing Catalog
Warsaw-based publisher HYPERSTRANGE has built a reputation in the indie gaming space through retro-inspired shooters and action titles influenced by classic PC games and ‘90s gaming culture.
The launch of “Slaughter Void” continues that direction, joining a catalog that includes titles such as “POSTAL: Brain Damaged,” “Jupiter Hell” and “Blood West.”
The Steam publisher sale launching alongside the game will include discounts across HYPERSTRANGE’s library, as well as new downloadable content for the immersive stealth first-person shooter “Blood West.”
Publisher Emphasizes Retro Gaming Influences
“Metal, ‘90s pop culture, and classic boomer shooters bleed out of our pores,” said Mateusz Filipek, founder of HYPERSTRANGE. “Slaughter Void could not have been a more perfect fit for us to work with.”
“While our catalog of games provides players with a variety of perspectives and gameplay modes, we know what we’re about. We know what we like, and Slaughter Void fits the bill perfectly. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome developer Dread Night into the family. Just wait until you see what’s coming next.”
Indie Action Games Continue Growing Audience
Retro-inspired action games have continued gaining momentum on PC platforms in recent years, particularly among players seeking fast-paced gameplay experiences influenced by older arcade titles and early first-person shooters.
Games emphasizing pixel-art visuals, speedrunning mechanics and high-difficulty combat have developed strong followings on Steam and other PC storefronts, where independent developers increasingly compete for visibility through digital showcases and themed sales.
With its heavy metal aesthetic, one-hit combat system and emphasis on aggressive gameplay, “Slaughter Void” is positioning itself within that growing niche of hardcore indie action titles.
“Slaughter Void” launches June 3 for PC through Steam and GOG alongside the week-long HYPERSTRANGE publisher sale.
