Shueisha Games has announced HOSHiN ENGi Re:surrection, a new single-player roguelite action game based on Ryu Fujisaki’s HOSHiN ENGi manga. Scheduled for release in 2027, the title will launch on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam.
The game was unveiled on September 9, 2026, and is being developed by LASTWONDER. Rather than simply adapting the original manga, Re:surrection takes place after its conclusion and introduces a new protagonist while retaining familiar characters and elements from the series.
HOSHiN ENGi Returns With a New Story
Fujisaki’s HOSHiN ENGi is based on Investiture of the Gods, a 16th-century Chinese literary work centered on mythology, political upheaval and the fall of a dynasty.
The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1996 to 2000 and has surpassed 22 million copies in print. American audiences have also been introduced to the series through Viz Media’s English-language publication and two anime adaptations.
HOSHiN ENGi Re:surrection is designed as a new entry point rather than a story requiring extensive knowledge of the manga.
Its narrative begins after peace was supposedly restored to the land. When a new threat emerges, Taikobo sends his disciple Toshin and the spirit beast Chuchue Doji on a mission to confront it.
Ryu Fujisaki Designs New Hero Toshin
Toshin is a newly created character drawn by Fujisaki specifically for the game. He is described as a disciple of Taikobo with a particular fascination for Paope, the magical treasures that form a central part of the combat system.
Chuchue Doji accompanies Toshin throughout the adventure. On the ground, the spirit beast operates independently, defending Toshin and interfering with enemies.
Players can also mount Chuchue Doji to move into the air, opening specialized aerial actions for avoiding attacks, navigating environments and approaching enemies from different positions.
The visual presentation is intended to evoke Fujisaki’s manga artwork in motion, connecting the game’s action-oriented design with the appearance of the original series.
Roguelite Combat Built Around Paope Customization
Combat centers on a dual-slot Paope system. Players equip a Main Paope to provide their primary offensive capabilities and a Sub Paope that modifies the tactical approach to combat.
Upgrading these treasures to their maximum levels can unlock evolved attacks. The range of combinations is intended to give players flexibility when constructing different builds during repeated dungeon runs.
Changing Dungeons Add Strategic Route Choices
As expected from a roguelite, dungeon layouts change between attempts. Players move between islands along branching routes rather than following a fixed path.
Completion rewards are shown before a route is selected, allowing players to weigh potential benefits against the challenges ahead.
Secret Arts are discovered randomly during runs, while resources collected during an attempt can be returned to the game’s hub. Those materials can then be spent on permanent upgrades for Toshin and individual Paope.
The progression structure means unsuccessful runs can still contribute toward stronger abilities and equipment in future attempts.
Classic HOSHiN ENGi Characters Return as Allies
Although Toshin is a new protagonist, several established HOSHiN ENGi characters will appear throughout the game.
Taikobo, Supushan, Yozen, Nataku and Koh Tenka are among the characters players can interact with at the hub and encounter through dialogue during runs.
Building relationships with these characters can unlock battlefield assistance. Players will also have opportunities to spar with allies to earn additional rewards, adding a relationship system alongside the roguelite progression mechanics.
2027 Release Planned Across Three Major Platforms
HOSHiN ENGi Re:surrection is scheduled to launch in 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Steam. The game will support one player and currently carries an ESRB E10+ rating, while its PEGI classification remains pending. Pricing has not yet been announced.
The title will support English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese.
Shueisha Games, the gaming division of Japanese publishing company Shueisha, will publish the title. The company works with developers in Japan and internationally on original properties as well as games connected to established Shueisha franchises.
LASTWONDER is handling development, drawing on experience across video games and other areas of digital entertainment.
With a new protagonist, randomized dungeon progression and a combat system built around customizable Paope, HOSHiN ENGi Re:surrection aims to expand Fujisaki’s manga universe through an original story. Additional details about the 2027 release are expected in the coming months.
