John McEnroe Criticized for ‘Disrespectful’ Remark After Novak Djokovic’s US Open Defeat

Date:

John McEnroe is facing criticism over his commentary following Mariano Navone’s stunning first-round victory against Novak Djokovic at the 2026 US Open. Fans accused the seven-time Grand Slam champion of diminishing the Argentine player’s achievement during ESPN’s coverage from Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Navone Earns Landmark Victory at Flushing Meadows

Navone delivered a composed performance Sunday night to secure the biggest victory of his career at New York’s Flushing Meadows.

Djokovic was visibly unwell during the match, and few observers believe Navone would have defeated the Serbian star at full fitness. Still, the Argentine maintained his focus and intensity to complete a significant upset against the world No. 5.

The result also ended one of Djokovic’s longest-running Grand Slam streaks. He had not lost in the opening round of a major tournament since falling to Paul Goldstein at the 2006 Australian Open.

Navone will next face either Stan Wawrinka or Matteo Berrettini in the second round Wednesday. The matchup will give him another opportunity to advance after his career-defining victory on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

McEnroe’s Court 21 Comment Draws Backlash

While discussing Navone’s next match, McEnroe made a remark that some viewers interpreted as dismissive of the Argentine’s achievement.

“You’ll be playing your second round on Court 21. We wish you the best,” McEnroe said on ESPN after the match.

“And he is going to have to try to play with that effort and intensity, but enjoy the moment, young man.”

The reference to Court 21 appeared to suggest that Navone would quickly move from the US Open’s main stadium to a much smaller outside court despite defeating one of the most successful players in tennis history.

Although the comment may have been intended as a lighthearted observation about tournament scheduling, it generated an immediate backlash on social media.

Tennis Fans Condemn McEnroe’s Commentary

Several viewers argued that McEnroe’s attitude toward Navone had been dismissive throughout the match.

“McEnroe’s entire attitude towards Navone was despicable from the jump,” one fan wrote.

Another posted: “McEnroe was disrespectful to Navone from the beginning. In the first set, he says how great an opponent Navone is for Djokovic because he won’t challenge him at all. Dude is a tired act.”

A third viewer called for McEnroe to leave the broadcast booth, writing: “McEnroe proves again and again why it’s time for him to go. Comments like this… he’s just an a——.”

“I feel like Mac is always spiteful of the new generation. Or really any player younger than him,” another fan suggested.

A fifth comment read: “Awful… Shameful commentary from the superficial McEnroe. The most unsportsmanlike comment ever.”

Debate Overshadows Navone’s Breakthrough Moment

McEnroe has long been known for his direct and sometimes provocative broadcasting style, reflecting the fiery personality that defined his playing career. His comments frequently generate debate among tennis viewers, particularly when discussing younger or less established competitors.

In this instance, however, the controversy risked overshadowing Navone’s landmark performance. Regardless of Djokovic’s physical condition, Navone still had to manage the pressure of playing inside Arthur Ashe Stadium and close out a victory over a 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Navone now turns his attention to the second round, where either Wawrinka or Berrettini will present another difficult test. While the debate surrounding McEnroe’s commentary continues, the Argentine’s first-round victory remains one of the most notable results of the 2026 US Open.
