Just Chessing Around Demo Launches on Steam With a Roguelike Twist on Classic Chess

Date:

Belgian indie developer Cabbage Club has released the first playable demo for Just Chessing Around, a strategy game that blends traditional chess with roguelike mechanics and unpredictable environmental hazards. The demo is now available on Steam and is also featured in the Six One Indie Demo Showcase, giving strategy and roguelike fans an early look ahead of the game’s planned Q4 2026 release.

A Fresh Take on Chess With Roguelike Gameplay

Unlike traditional chess, Just Chessing Around transforms the familiar board into a dynamic battlefield where the environment constantly changes the rules of play. Players progress across a series of increasingly challenging chessboards while pursuing a single objective: defeating the Dark King.

Each run introduces new enemy units, upgrades, and tactical possibilities, encouraging experimentation rather than memorization. Environmental hazards such as tornadoes, quicksand, water, tall grass, spike traps, lightning, and slime alter movement and strategy, forcing players to adapt throughout every match.

The game also introduces unconventional mechanics, including powerful buffs that can turn even basic Pawns into formidable units, necromancer Bishops capable of supporting fallen allies, and Knights with seemingly unlimited movement under certain conditions.

Demo Now Available Ahead of Full Release

Cabbage Club announced the demo’s release on August 4, inviting players to experience the game’s unique blend of chess strategy and roguelike progression.

The studio is also encouraging creators and members of the gaming press to share previews and gameplay videos to help introduce the title to a wider audience. Those interested in covering the complete version closer to its planned Q4 2026 launch can request access to a full-game Steam review code.

Inspired by Classic Roguelikes

Learning Through Gameplay

According to the developers, Just Chessing Around draws inspiration from roguelike titles such as The Binding of Isaac, emphasizing discovery through gameplay rather than lengthy tutorials.

Instead of explaining every mechanic upfront, the game encourages players to experiment, learn from mistakes, and gradually master new systems during repeated playthroughs.

Each successive chessboard becomes more difficult, introducing additional enemy pieces—including magical opponents such as mages—that expand tactical possibilities as players advance.

Living Battlefields Change Every Match

One of the game’s defining features is its interactive environment.

Rather than playing exclusively on flat, static chessboards, players must account for terrain that directly affects gameplay. Water can reshape the battlefield, while quicksand forces pieces to keep moving or risk being trapped.

These environmental effects create situations that differ from one run to the next, reinforcing the game’s roguelike structure.

Key Gameplay Features

Classic Pieces Meet Original Characters

Players will command familiar chess pieces such as Bishops, Knights, Rooks, Queens, Kings, and Pawns, while also encountering original characters. The demo introduces a unique piece named Jerry, with additional custom units planned for the full release.

Buffs, Items, and Strategic Upgrades

Players can strengthen their armies by collecting buffs that stack together to create powerful combinations. Consumable items—including fire bombs—offer additional tactical options for eliminating enemy forces during battle.

Bosses Use the Same Rules

Boss encounters are designed around the same mechanics available to players. Mini-bosses can enhance their own armies with buffs, use items strategically, and even transport their forces across the board, creating battles that emphasize tactical planning over scripted encounters.

Animated Piece Reactions

Beyond gameplay mechanics, each chess piece features animated reactions to events unfolding around them. Pieces visibly respond to hazards, including sinking into quicksand, giving the battlefield additional personality and visual charm.

Small Studio Behind the Project

Cabbage Club is an independent Belgian game studio founded by two friends who met while attending college. The developers combined their backgrounds in game development to create Just Chessing Around, while also drawing on experience from previous commercial game releases and original music production.

The project received support from Flanders Game Hub, which assists game development initiatives in Belgium.

Looking Ahead

With its newly released Steam demo and participation in the Six One Indie Demo Showcase, Just Chessing Around is introducing players to a strategy game that reimagines traditional chess through roguelike progression, environmental hazards, and evolving tactical choices. As development continues toward its planned Q4 2026 launch, the demo offers players an opportunity to experience how familiar chess mechanics can be transformed into a highly replayable strategy adventure.
