Legacy Code Brings Physics-Based Mechanimal Creation to PC in 2027

Date:

Legacy Code, a physics-driven simulation game from developer Room 127 and publisher Kodansha Game Creators’ Lab, is set to launch for PC via Steam in 2027. The newly revealed title centers on building unusual creatures known as “Mechanimals” from an assortment of everyday objects and mechanical components, with physics determining how each creation moves and fights.

The game is being showcased at Tokyo Game Show this weekend, where it was selected as one of eight finalists for Sense of Wonder Night 2026.

Players Can Build Mechanimals From Almost Anything

At the heart of Legacy Code is a creature-building system that encourages players to combine seemingly incompatible objects into functional creations.

Players manufacture Mechanimals by assembling different parts, including heads, arms and legs alongside motors, doll heads, character merchandise, electric fans, televisions, 3D puzzles, dentures, chains and even cacti.

The concept deliberately avoids conventional rules for anatomy. Instead of requiring players to follow a predetermined blueprint, the game allows unusual combinations to become functioning creatures.

Marionette Engine Powers Unpredictable Creations

The system is powered by Room 127’s proprietary “Marionette Engine,” which is designed to bring Mechanimals to life regardless of their shape or construction.

Individual powered components have their own characteristics, meaning the placement and combination of parts can dramatically influence how a Mechanimal behaves. Some creations may move efficiently, while others can produce unexpected results as they attempt to walk across the environment or navigate obstacles.

That unpredictability is a central part of the gameplay. Rather than giving players complete control over how a machine will behave once assembled, Legacy Code uses its physics simulation to turn experimentation into part of the challenge.

Combat Provides New Parts and Upgrade Opportunities

Creature construction feeds directly into the game’s combat system. After putting together a battle-ready Mechanimal, players can send their creation into fights against unusual opponents.

Defeated enemies provide additional parts that can be collected and incorporated into future designs. Players can attach newer or more powerful components to their Mechanimals before returning to battle and taking on increasingly difficult challenges.

The progression system creates a cycle of building, fighting, collecting and rebuilding, with players continually experimenting to determine how different combinations perform.

Because the physics engine influences each creation differently, acquiring a more powerful component may not automatically result in a better machine. Players will also have to consider how individual parts interact with the rest of their design.

Legacy Code Named Sense of Wonder Night Finalist

The game’s unconventional mechanics have already earned recognition at Tokyo Game Show. Legacy Code was selected as one of eight finalists for Sense of Wonder Night 2026 from a field of more than 1,500 submissions.

The program highlights games built around distinctive concepts and ideas intended to create a sense of surprise or discovery. Legacy Code was recognized for its approach to creating unpredictable creatures from discarded and mismatched components.

“We tried our best to create Mechanimals that would break the physics engine, but somehow, every combination of parts led to a living creature,” said Yasuta, Programmer at Room127. “Creativity truly knows no bounds in Legacy Code, and we invite all Tokyo Game Show attendees to try their hand at creating bizarre creatures.”

PC Release Planned for 2027

Tokyo Game Show attendees will have an opportunity to try the creature-building system firsthand and experiment with different Mechanimal configurations.

For players in the United States and other markets, Legacy Code is currently scheduled to launch on PC through Steam sometime in 2027. The game will support English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese at release.

With its combination of physics simulation, unconventional creature construction and combat-based progression, Legacy Code is positioning experimentation as its defining feature, giving players the freedom to discover how even the strangest collection of parts can become a functioning Mechanimal.
