Finnish development studio Housemarque was recently acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Co-founder and CEO Ilari Kuittinen announced in a Finnish interview that other big players have also expressed interest.
Last Tuesday, Sony Interactive Entertainment officially announced the acquisition of “Returnal” developer Housemarque. The studio manager now revealed that it was not only the Japanese software company that was interested in an acquisition.
“The usual suspects”
Ilari Kuittinen was asked in an interview which companies have expressed an interest. To which he replied: “The usual suspects. These are the big players in the field from China, Sweden and the United States. I have to say that a very special spring is behind us and the fact that we are participating in the competition feels even a little surreal. “
In America, of course, there are several publishers that would have liked to take over the Finnish development study. You can only guess if Microsoft was interested in a purchase. From Sweden, only the Embracer Group is in doubt, which is in the mood to buy and is already one of the largest European game manufacturers. The Chinese company could be Tencent.
In the end, those in charge of Housemarque decided on Sony. Given the successful collaboration on the roguelike shooter “Returnal”, the PlayStation company was in the best position for a successful acquisition. For this reason, the announced studio purchase was anything but a surprise. On the day of the official announcement, we learned that negotiations had already started last year.
With said PS5 title, Housemarque made the breakthrough towards bigger projects, so you can look forward to more exclusive AAA productions in the future. Kuittinen announced that upcoming projects could be “bigger and more ambitious.”
