Pixel Arcadia Debuts With More Than 50 Retro Games, Terranigma Revival and Major World Premieres

Date:

Pixel Arcadia launched its first retro gaming showcase on August 24, bringing together more than 50 publishers and developers for a slate of world premieres, release-date announcements and gameplay reveals. Headline announcements included the return of Terranigma, the immediate launch of Dotemu’s multiplayer title Blaster Bug and a 35th-anniversary revival of the Alien Breed franchise.

The event, organized by London-based marketing agency Pixel Helix, was designed to give classic games, retro-inspired projects and independent developers a dedicated global showcase as the market for remasters, re-releases and new games influenced by earlier console generations continues to expand.

Pixel Arcadia Features Eight World Premieres

The inaugural Pixel Arcadia presentation included eight world premieres alongside several world-exclusive announcements and new gameplay footage.

Among the biggest reveals was Terranigma, the Japanese action RPG originally developed by Quintet. The game never received an official North American release, contributing to its cult status among U.S. retro gaming enthusiasts.

Licensed by Square Enix and published by Clear River Games, the new version of Terranigma is scheduled to reach modern platforms in 2027. Development is being supported by several members of the original Quintet team.

“Twelve months ago we set out on a mission to unite the retro space, to create an event that gives retro the stage it deserves and provides an important route to speak directly to retro gamers worldwide.” said Al Hibberd, CEO of Pixel Helix.

Arthur Tolmie, Chief Communications Officer added, “We are hugely grateful to all of the partners who took part in this first event – we have big plans for Pixel Arcadia moving forward that we can’t wait to share very soon.”

Blaster Bug Launches as Free Multiplayer Arcade Game

Dotemu used Pixel Arcadia to unveil Blaster Bug, a new multiplayer arcade game from the team behind Windjammers 2.

Inspired by Bomberman and other local multiplayer games from the early 1990s, Blaster Bug features hand-drawn 2D sprites and multiple game modes supporting as many as eight players. Unlike many of the titles announced during the showcase, the game received an immediate release and is available to play for free.

Alien Breed Returns for 35th Anniversary

Another major announcement was Alien Breed 35th Anniversary, a collection marking the return of the science-fiction action franchise.

Licensed by Team17 and developed by Antstream, the collection includes six games alongside modernized controls and additional features. New modes include online cooperative play, rush mode and horde mode, while historical material will provide additional background on the franchise.

The release also marks Commodore’s return to software publishing, with additional Amiga classics expected to follow.

Ninja JaJaMaru and Other Classics Receive New Editions

City Connection and Clear River Games revealed Ninja JaJaMaru: Yokai Night Parade, a new entry combining retro pixel art, modern 3D graphics, action-RPG progression, Japanese Yokai mythology and hip-hop influences.

Komi Games announced Infested DX, a 16-bit remake of the 2018 point-and-click adventure Infested. The game draws inspiration from NES-era adventures including Shadowgate, Déjà Vu and Uninvited.

Ziggurat Interactive also unveiled Sanitarium Enhanced, an upgraded edition of the 1998 psychological horror adventure. Developed by QuByte Interactive, the new version will bring Sanitarium to consoles for the first time with improved controls, an optional hint system and a concept gallery.

Theocracy and Ninja Baseball League Man Return

SNEG Games announced the return of Theocracy, the real-time strategy title originally developed by Philos Laboratories. Set in 15th-century Mexico and Central America, the game centers on developing a tribe and preparing for the arrival of Spanish forces.

City Connection also revealed Ninja Baseball League Man: Bases Loaded. The new edition brings the 1990s IREM arcade title to consoles for the first time with an HD recreation, additional content and a crossover with Jaleco’s Bases Loaded sports franchise.

Release Dates and Platform Announcements Expand Showcase

Pixel Arcadia also provided updates on several previously announced projects.

New footage was shown for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, while Phantom Gear received a November 12 release date for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and Steam.

Rolla is scheduled for Steam on September 30, while Echoes of the Unread is coming to NES and Steam on October 15.

Carrier Command 2 was confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Heavy Metal Death Can is headed to PlayStation 5 this fall, while Cosmi: Forbidden Forest & Beyond received a new title and additional game modes.

More Independent and Retro-Inspired Games Showcased

The presentation also featured gameplay from a broad lineup of upcoming games, including Dungeon Lurker, Petal Runner, The Transylvania Adventure of Simon Quest, Toxic Crusaders, Exobrave, Silent Planet: Elegy of a Dying World, RogueCraft DX, Cathedral: Crow’s Curse, Talaka, Bracer and Hazard Pay.

Other featured projects included Overserved, Project Neon, Tossdown, Hyperyuki: Snowboard Syndicate, Bobls, Mad King Redemption, AOKAKI, Pocket Bravery MD, Aggelos 2 and Hyper Sentinel Fusion.

GOG.com and Clear River Games supported the event as segment sponsors, reflecting Pixel Arcadia’s focus on both game preservation and contemporary retro-inspired development.

With more than 50 developers and publishers represented, Pixel Arcadia’s debut placed established classics alongside new projects influenced by earlier gaming generations. The mix of major revivals such as Terranigma and Alien Breed with new independent releases positions the showcase as another platform for the growing retro gaming market.
