PixelJunk Monsters 3 Announced at Gamescom With 4K Hand-Drawn Visuals and September Playtest

Date:

Q-Games has announced PixelJunk Monsters 3, the latest entry in its long-running tower defense series, during the Future Games Show at gamescom 2026. The new game returns to the franchise’s hand-drawn visual style, adds roguelike elements, and will support both solo play and two-player co-op.

PixelJunk Monsters 3 Returns to Hand-Drawn Roots

Developed by Kyoto-based independent studio Q-Games, PixelJunk Monsters 3 is being created as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the PixelJunk Monsters series.

The game brings back the series’ distinctive tower defense formula, where players directly move around the battlefield, build defensive structures and protect their territory from waves of enemies.

This time, the hand-drawn art style is being presented in 4K resolution, giving the familiar visual approach a sharper, more detailed presentation.

New Roguelike Elements Expand Strategy

Q-Games is introducing new roguelike systems intended to add more strategic variation and replayability.

Players will still run, dance and construct towers while defending against incoming monsters, but the new systems are designed to make individual sessions less predictable.

The game will also introduce new towers, new enemies and boss battles, expanding on the core mechanics established in earlier PixelJunk Monsters titles.

Two-Player Local and Online Co-Op Confirmed

PixelJunk Monsters 3 will support one or two players.

Co-op will be available both locally and online, preserving the couch co-op experience associated with earlier entries while giving players the option to team up remotely.

The game is categorized as a tower defense, strategy and co-op title, with the emphasis remaining on active movement rather than passive map management.

Public PC Playtest Begins in September

Q-Games also announced a 120-hour PC playtest for members of its Discord community.

The playtest begins at 6 p.m. PDT on September 3, 2026, which corresponds to September 4 in Japan and Central Europe, and runs until 6 p.m. PDT on September 8.

Access will be limited to members of the official Q-Games Discord server.

The test is being held in celebration of the studio’s 25th anniversary and will give players an early opportunity to try the game before its full release.

PixelJunk Series Marks Two Decades

The original PixelJunk Monsters became one of the best-known titles in Q-Games’ PixelJunk lineup, blending colorful visuals with an accessible but increasingly demanding tower defense structure.

PixelJunk Monsters 3 is positioned as a return to that foundation rather than a complete reinvention.

The developers are emphasizing hand-drawn art, direct character movement and cooperative play while layering in newer roguelike mechanics.

The upcoming game will also support a broad range of languages, including English, Japanese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Korean and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

Q-Games Continues Long Indie Development History

Q-Games was founded in 2001 by Dylan Cuthbert, who previously worked on projects including the original Star Fox.

The Kyoto studio has developed more than 20 original games, including PixelJunk Monsters, PixelJunk Eden, Nom Nom Galaxy and The Tomorrow Children: Phoenix Edition.

Q-Games also helped establish BitSummit, an annual independent game event in Japan that has grown into one of the country’s most prominent showcases for indie developers.

Steam Release Confirmed

PixelJunk Monsters 3 is currently confirmed for PC via Steam.

Q-Games has not yet announced a full release date.

With its return to hand-drawn visuals, new roguelike mechanics and support for both local and online co-op, PixelJunk Monsters 3 is aiming to modernize the series while preserving the interactive tower defense gameplay that defined its earlier entries.
