Scotland’s Garden Birdwatch Reveals Sharp Rise in Coal Tit Sightings

Date:

New figures from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) suggest that coal tits are becoming increasingly common in Scottish gardens, recording the largest rise in sightings in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch. The annual survey, one of the UK’s largest citizen science projects, also found increases in blue tit and great tit numbers across Scotland, while sightings of goldfinches and robins declined.

House Sparrows Still Scotland’s Most Common Garden Bird

House sparrows remained the most frequently spotted bird in Scottish gardens, retaining their position at the top of the rankings.

Starlings also held on to second place despite a drop in both the number recorded and the number of gardens in which they were seen.

Blue tits climbed from fifth to third in the Scottish rankings, overtaking both chaffinches and blackbirds.

Coal Tit Records Biggest Increase in Scotland

Among the most notable changes was the performance of the coal tit, which posted the largest increase in sightings and entered Scotland’s top 10 garden birds in seventh place.

Great tits also remained in the top 10, holding steady in ninth position.

The coal tit, recognisable by its grey back and distinctive black cap, proved particularly popular in parts of western and northern Scotland.

Strong Coal Tit Numbers in Highlands and Islands

Argyll and Bute, the Highlands, and the Scottish Borders were the only areas anywhere in the UK where coal tits featured in the top five most-spotted garden birds.

Despite its strong Scottish showing, the species did not make the overall UK top 10.

More Than 650,000 Take Part in Big Garden Birdwatch

The Big Garden Birdwatch, first launched in 1979, took place in January and saw more than 650,000 participants across the UK record birds visiting gardens or public spaces over a one-hour period.

The survey is widely regarded as an important indicator of bird population trends and garden wildlife habits.

Across the UK as a whole, house sparrows were again the most commonly recorded bird, although average sightings per garden were lower than in Scotland.

Blue tits ranked as the second most-spotted bird across the UK and were seen in the highest percentage of participating gardens, though they appeared slightly less frequently north of the border.

Regional Variations Across Scotland

Chaffinches held fourth place in Scotland’s overall rankings, with a modest increase in numbers compared with the previous year.

The species performed particularly strongly in western Scotland, appearing in around three-quarters of gardens in Argyll and Bute — the only area in the UK where it was the most commonly sighted bird.

In West Dunbartonshire, chaffinches rose sharply from 11th place to fourth in the local rankings.

Unusual Birdwatch Results in Inverclyde and Shetland

Inverclyde stood out as the only local authority area in the UK where jackdaws topped the birdwatch rankings, having been spotted in more than half of participating gardens.

Meanwhile, Shetland was one of just two areas in the UK where collared doves featured among the five most-spotted birds.

The islands also recorded sightings of three of the five rarest species logged in the entire UK count:

Rare Birds Spotted in Shetland

  • Fieldfare
  • Great black-backed gull
  • Grey heron

Scottish Birdwatch Highlights Regional Wildlife Trends

This year’s results underline the distinct character of Scotland’s bird populations, with several species performing differently north of the border compared with the wider UK.

While house sparrows continue to dominate Scottish gardens, the notable rise in coal tit sightings suggests shifting patterns in garden bird populations that may reflect changing habitats, food availability and local environmental conditions.
