System76 Oryx Pro 15″ and 17″: Linux Laptop with i7-12700H, Ampere and Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS

With the 15-inch and 17-inch Oryx Pro, the US Linux distributor System76 has a series of laptops with an Intel Core i7-12700H and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti or RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU, as well as the in-house Linux distribution Pop! _OS 22.04 LTS, a derivative of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, released with Cosmic UX.

Linux workhorse with Alder Lake-H and Amp

The Oryx Pro is always based on a hybrid Intel Core i7-12700H (“Alder Lake-H”) with a total of 14 processor cores (6P+8E) and 20 threads as well as a 45 Watt TDP/PL1 or PL2 of 115 watts and can optionally be used with a 15 or 17-inch matte IPS display with 144 Hz. The resolution is FHD/1080p in both cases, the surcharge for the larger panel is $79.

In addition to the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8GB 6144 CUDA Core Laptop GPU and a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 16GB 7424 Shader Unit Laptop GPU, Oryx Pro has the following hardware.

System76 itself speaks of gamers and professional users in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning, whom the Oryx Pro should primarily target. The laptops come with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, which can be extended up to three years for a fee.

Custom firmware for BIOS and controller

One of the peculiarities of the laptops from the American Linux distributor is the firmware that has been adapted to the systems. Users get the Open Firmware System76 with open source BIOS center bootEDK2 and the manufacturer’s own firmware applications, as well as the Integrated open source System76 controller firmware.
