The House of Hikmah Launches on Steam, Bringing an Emotional Adventure Inspired by the Islamic Golden Age

Date:

Indie developer Lunacy Studios has released The House of Hikmah, a narrative-driven 3D adventure game that explores themes of grief, healing, and legacy. Available now on PC through Steam, the title debuts at $19.99 and marks the first release from the newly formed studio made up of veteran game developers.

A Story-Driven Adventure Set in a Mystical World

In The House of Hikmah, players follow Maya, a determined 14-year-old girl searching for answers after the death of her father. Set within a mystical realm inspired by the Islamic Golden Age, the game centers on Maya’s journey through the legendary House of Wisdom, a historic intellectual hub that once stood in Baghdad and helped shape advancements in science, philosophy, and mathematics.

As Maya explores the world, she encounters historical scholars drawn from the real Islamic Golden Age, each dealing with grief and personal loss in their own way. Their stories and teachings help shape Maya’s understanding of mourning and resilience.

Physics-Based Puzzles Reflect Maya’s Emotional Journey

Gameplay combines exploration with physics-based puzzles designed to mirror the protagonist’s emotional development.

Puzzle Mechanics Include:

  • Transforming objects through different states of matter
  • Gliding through wind channels to traverse unique environments
  • Bending light through glass and manipulating environmental elements

Players use an ancient heirloom left behind by Maya’s father to solve these challenges and progress through each scholar’s realm.

Confronting Grief Through Symbolism

Throughout the game, Maya must confront a mysterious force known as “The Widow,” a surreal entity representing unresolved sorrow and emotional suppression.

According to Creative Director Faris Attieh, the character was designed to embody the universal struggle many people face when coping with loss.

“So many of us have experienced the overwhelming feeling of loss in one way or another,” Attieh said. “The Widow character acts as a physical manifestation of those complex emotions, and represents the urge we’ve all felt to push them aside.”

Veteran Development Team and Full Voice Cast

Lunacy Studios’ debut title was developed by a team with experience on several major franchises familiar to U.S. gamers, including Life is Strange, Star Wars: Battlefront, Mass Effect, and Assassin’s Creed.

The project also features music from Grammy and BAFTA-winning composer Austin Wintory, known for his work on Journey, Sword of the Sea, and The Pathless.

Voice talent includes actors from major titles such as Battlefield 6, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, and Split Fiction, with Sophia Eleni voicing the lead character, Maya.

Release Details for The House of Hikmah

The House of Hikmah is now available on PC via Steam with English and Arabic text and voice localization. The game is priced at $19.99 in the United States.

A Promising Debut for Lunacy Studios

With its focus on emotional storytelling, cultural history, and symbolic gameplay, The House of Hikmah positions itself as a distinctive new entry in the narrative adventure genre. For Lunacy Studios, the release represents the beginning of what the developer says will be a broader effort to create story-rich games centered on culture, identity, and human experience.
