I like the free developer community ports has announced is the open source operating system adapted to smartphones and tablets ubuntu touchwhich was originally brought to life by UK Linux distributor Canonical, has now also been officially released for the modular and fair-made Fairphone 4.
Ubuntu Touch available through the UBports installer
With the latest available through the project page on the GitHub development platform UBports Installer Ubuntu Touch OTA-23, which is still based on the somewhat outdated Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (“Xenial Xerus”), can be installed on the Fairphone 4. This makes the Dutch manufacturer’s smartphone of the same name, released in October 2021, a the first Android 11 device to officially support installing Ubuntu Touch.
Previously, Fairphone 2 and Fairphone 3 also offered support for the UBports open source operating system.
We are pleased to announce that an Ubuntu Touch port for Fairphone 4 is now available in the UBports installer.
We are very excited about this latest port, the Fairphone 4 is not only a great phone, but it is the first port based on Android 11 for Ubuntu Touch.
To find out what all the fuss is about, download the latest version of the installer and see for yourself.
Fairphone 2, 3 and 4 also allow other alternative mobile operating systems such as /e/OS, postmarketOS, which is designed for data protection and anonymity, CalyxOS or to install LineageOS.
Ubuntu Touch and 5G are still fighting each other
As the developers, moreover, in the official ubports forum have reported, there are currently still problems using the 5G mobile communications standard under Ubuntu Touch, which is therefore not currently available and will be shipped at a later date.
The Fairphone 4 is one of the few smartphones that can handle alternative operating systems based on the main Linux kernels as well as Halium, an abstraction layer for GNU/Linux on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
