Sci-Fi Monster-Taming Action RPG From Former Skylanders Developers Arrives June 9
Canadian indie studio Hatchery Games announced that Voidling Bound has surpassed 300,000 wishlists ahead of its official launch next week on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The game is scheduled to release June 9, 2026, for PC, with console versions planned later for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Developed by former contributors to the Skylanders franchise, Voidling Bound blends third-person shooter combat with creature evolution, genetic customization, and action RPG systems.
Monster Evolution and DNA Customization Drive Gameplay
Voidling Bound places players in the role of a “Space Wrangler” who bonds with creatures known as Voidlings to battle a parasitic threat spreading across multiple planets.
Players directly control their creatures in combat while customizing their evolution through branching upgrade paths that alter appearance, elemental abilities, combat styles, and special powers.
The game has drawn comparisons from early players to a combination of Spore and Warframe due to its mix of biological customization and fast-paced sci-fi action.
Breeding and Mutation Systems Add Deep Customization
The game includes multiple progression and experimentation systems, including:
- DNA mutation mechanics
- Branching evolution paths
- Creature breeding
- Stat allocation systems
- Cosmetic gene customization
- Unlockable body parts and visual traits
Players can alter attributes such as strength, agility, vitality, and recovery while discovering rare mutations that significantly affect gameplay.
The system is designed to encourage experimentation and replayability through highly customizable creature builds.
Demo Gains Strong Reception Ahead of Launch
The playable demo for Voidling Bound is already available on Steam and has received an “Overwhelmingly Positive” user rating.
According to the studio, the demo currently holds a 97% approval rating across more than 1,300 player reviews.
Progress made in the demo will carry directly into the full release, allowing players to continue developing their Voidlings after launch.
Endgame Mode Planned After Main Campaign
The developers said the game’s main campaign is expected to run between six and 10 hours.
After completing the story, players unlock a high-difficulty endgame mode called “The Abyss,” featuring increasingly difficult combat encounters and reward systems designed for advanced character builds.
This structure mirrors the growing popularity of live-service-inspired progression systems in action RPGs, where long-term replayability remains a major focus for players.
Former Skylanders Developers Lead the Studio
Hatchery Games is based in Quebec City and was formed by developers who previously worked on major franchises including Skylanders, Borderlands 3, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and Call of Duty.
The team says the project was created from a desire to modernize the monster-catching genre by giving players direct third-person control over their creatures during combat.
Experienced Developers Across Gaming and Visual Effects
The studio’s leadership team includes:
- Jonathan Rancourt, formerly involved with Skylanders and Borderlands 3
- Simon Grelier, previously associated with Ubisoft and Beenox
- Frederick Gagnon, with experience in gaming and visual effects work on projects including Stranger Things
- Carl-Simon Picard, who previously worked in both game development and VFX production
Several team members also contributed to film and television projects including Alien: Covenant and Stranger Things Season 3.
Creature-Taming Games Continue Evolving
The success of Voidling Bound’s wishlist campaign reflects ongoing demand for monster-collection and creature-building games, particularly those combining RPG progression with action-oriented combat systems.
While traditional monster-catching franchises remain highly popular, newer indie developers are increasingly experimenting with hybrid gameplay models that merge creature customization, survival systems, and fast-paced combat mechanics.
With strong early player feedback, a successful demo launch, and a growing online following, Voidling Bound is positioning itself as one of the more notable indie action RPG releases of the summer gaming season.
