Windows 11: How to change the default browser

Date:

Windows 11 comes with Microsoft’s Microsoft Edge browser. However, to change the default browser, a few steps are necessary. We’ll show you what to set up.

Mozilla Firefox developers managed to change the default browser settings in Windows 11 (

here for the mega test
) and simplify setup for users. After installing Mozilla Firefox, you can first use “Set as Default Browser” to ensure that Microsoft Edge is still available in Windows 11, but is no longer the default browser.

If Microsoft creates more hurdles in Windows 11 in this regard, that won’t be a problem. Since the procedures to change the default browser for Google Chrome and Opera also work with Mozilla Firefox.

Change the default browser in the Settings app

To make Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera your default browser, first open the Settings app in Windows 11. Click “Apps” and then “Default apps.” Then find your web browser in the list, for example Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera. At this point, you now have to manually specify for all file types which program they should be opened with.

Of course, “.htm” and “.html” are the most important for the web browser. You should also change the browser to “HTTP” and “HTTPS”. Click on the file type and then select Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera and confirm the change. This way you can also assign different browsers to different file types and thus easily work in parallel with Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera.

Look at the list and simply switch the browser to Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Opera wherever “Microsoft Edge” is stored.

Even if you have changed all the settings, Windows 11 still opens some areas with Microsoft Edge because the browser is stored as the system browser. To change that too, you need the free add-on tool

edge deflector.
You need to install the tool. Microsoft tries to block the tool on a regular basis. In this case you have to wait a bit until there is a new version and install it.

After installing EdgeDeflector, open Settings apps in Windows 11 and click “Apps” and then “Default apps”. Change the setting so that the “EdgeDeflector” program appears for “Microsoft Edge”. You can then test the conversion with the link that the programmer displays in the window.
