2020 review

After signing a three-year, $ 30 million contract to return to a free agent, Jeurys Familia was expected to become a Mets blockade rescuer in 2019. ..

A year ago I gave Familia his F Report card results Keeping in mind that Mets couldn’t reach the postseason head-on in the 2019 season ( Edwin Diaz). In his honor, Familia went into the off-season to prove something and lost considerable weight to refine his body and mechanics to run in 2020.

During the second match of the season, Familia threw a scoreless seven innings, with Mets leading 2-1 against the Atlanta Braves.Diaz blew saves in the contest and brought home runs Marcell Ozuna In the bottom of the ninth inning before Mets lost the extra.

Familia’s second appearance surfaced skepticism in 2019 when he allowed the Boston Red Sox to run twice at Fenway Park. Familia continued to show four straights without allowing him to run, but was in trouble again on August 8.

Familia couldn’t find a strike zone against the Miami Marlins.He triggered a double play to mitigate some damage, but the Familia gave up the single and walked three steps forward. Drew Smith I had to join the game to rescue him from the jam.

The walk suffered throughout the season as right-handed players walked 10 batters in 11 innings pitched in August. His ERA for the month was 4.09.

The Familia appeared a bit rounded in September as they pitched to a solid 3.00 ERA in the last 12 innings.

Compared to the disaster of the 2019 season, Familia has made significant improvements this year. Still, he can’t find a strike zone, which makes him an unreliable bullpen arm in high-leverage situations.

2021 outlook

Looking at his advanced indicators of the season, there are some things that the Jeuris Familia is doing well, and it brings some promises for the future. His exit speed (85.9 mph), barrel percentage (4.0) and hard hit percentage (30.7) are all ranked above the 86th percentile among other MLB pitchers.

Familia is hard to square because he still throws hard and makes big moves with sinkers and sliders. The problem for veterans is that he has lost the ability to clean up the batter and is still walking them with high clips.

For the first time in his career, Familia’s strikeout rate fell below 20% (19.2 K%), but his walking rate exceeded 15% for the second consecutive year. Unless a 31-year-old player can start cleaning up the batter instead of putting it on the base, he will have a hard time living up to the $ 11.67 million that Mets will pay him next season.
