Godfall certainly has some graphics. Five minutes after this self-proclaimed “loot slasher” (ugh), it’s clear why Sony decided to push it as its first masterpiece game. PS5.. Is Godfall so interesting to play? not really. But when it comes to passing an eye test, Fuboy will sprinkle the next generation of magic powder.
So what exactly is Godfall? After spending a few hours on it, I can tell you it’s a pretty terrible derivative. No matter where you look, there are far better games scattered around. Destiny’s loot and gear system removed. The confident Swagger of Dark Souls combat, certainly many of the related challenges have been mostly castrated. Serious seriousness that can be escaped in the Call of Duty campaign, but certainly in games where the playable character is a heavily armored man trying to ensure the fall of his god-like brothers. Did you start seeing where the title of that imaginary name came from?
However, there is no denying how good it looks. I’m sure Godfall is a great ad to promote the power of the PS5. Since we didn’t pre-order at once, Sony’s new console exists as a purely fictional device. Still, no matter how clean the console edition is, I’m sure the version I’m playing is cleaner. Well, as long as you’re cool, label the game about a high fantasy killer in stupid armor that hits and kills monsters with a pointed shield as “pretty”.
Playing on the RTX 3080 and combined with the Intel i9 10900k and 32GB of DDR4 RAM, Godfall is a knockout. When everything is ramped up to the best Epic presets, the action is almost always kept at stable 4K / 60fps. Given the level of hardware involved, that’s really necessary. A slight hitch occurs during a more desperate battle with multiple enemies — I saw a strange drop in my early 50s — but the motion blur of the game is well handled, so the roar It is often overlooked.
That said, I came across a strange habit of trying to play Godfall on Philips 4K OLED. Please give it a try. I can’t run the game correctly in HDR. High dynamic range is enabled by default and there is currently no way to switch it off from the in-game menu. For some reason, when Godfall enables HDR, the TV tantrums and immediately downscales the image to 1080p, even though the image appears to be 4K.
Playing with it for 20 minutes was unsuccessful, so I had to bite a bullet and play the game in 3200 x 2000 window mode. Godfall’s biggest selling point is “LOOK AT ME, I’M NEXT-GEN!”, Which is compulsory. Playing at a compromised resolution is a bit bitter medicine to choke.
If Godfall looks like a next-generation game, it certainly doesn’t work like one. The third person’s struggle tries to mimic Dark Souls and Sekrio: Shadows Die Twice, but without the nuances of From Software’s stunning hack and slash adventure.
If the game is too easy, untalented fingers rarely complain, but in the case of Godfall, my numbers are an exception. Not only can you sleepwalk in most battles, but even if you bite it, death does not incur the penalties it should have. If you die in the middle of a boss battle, you will respawn in a nearby area. This allows you to quickly hack a big bad guy who is losing chunks in the health bar. It shows a lack of confidence in the player’s desire for a challenge.
In the defense of Godfall, combat looks and feels pretty good. Yes, you cannot escape from the original shallowness. The basic principles of blocking, avoiding, and parrying can be learned in minutes, but fighting looks like a moving part. The real story: I love avoidance. It’s a small detail, but the clever little animations that help the sci-fi knight get out of danger are stunning.
I didn’t expect this to happen, but Godfall’s most reminiscent game is the PS4 God of War. This can be enjoyed thanks to the PC (certainly not great) PlayStation Now.. Isn’t it appropriate? The camera layout fits snugly on your shoulder. How to charge and throw the shield. How to open a specific chest by finding and destroying three nearby artifacts. A supercharged state of the combat swing that begins by clicking on both sticks on the gamepad. All of this speaks to a lack of imagination, but if the action looks so good, like the brutal adventure of the restarted Kratos, it’s easier to ignore the gameplay cracks.There is no mistake, but apart from various genres, God of War is Lots A better game.
We’ll talk more about this in next week’s Godfall review, but the easy access to the game makes it not only hard to fail, but definitely easy to play. Are you suffering from a short attention period? Godfall’s gorgeous technology and naive battles are perfect for times when you’re only half annoyed to focus on the game. Sticking a podcast and tinkering with your thumb will rarely make you angry with Godfall.
Does it justify a $ 70 purchase? There is no hell. However, the combination of good graphics and bristless gameplay has certain appeal. The final idea that you can’t help but feel guilty about pondering: It’s a bit nice to play a game that looks good enough to half justify dropping the thick edge of the ground on the RTX 3080.
