The government of the Sakhalin region of the Far East and the Nova Wind company of the Rosatom State Nuclear Power Corporation have signed a cooperation agreement on wind farm construction projects.
The document was signed by Alexei Bilyk, Head of the Sakhalin Provincial Government and Alexander Korchagin, CEO of NovaWind JSC.
The agreement focuses on the feasibility study for the construction of wind power generation facilities in the Sakhalin district and preparatory measures for the construction of wind farms with a total capacity of 200 megawatts to be commissioned in 2024.
Alexander Korchagin, CEO of Nova Wind, said: “Sakhalin represents an interesting new area for us due to its characteristics related to the implementation of wind energy projects. The construction of wind farms will have a positive impact on the environment in Sakhalin, too. How to create an additional impetus for regional development of industries that focuses on the management and reduction of carbon emissions. I hope that our cooperation will be successful and strongly contribute to the region becoming carbon neutral. “
Alexei Bilyk, head of the Sakhalin regional government, added: “Russian President Vladimir Putin led the reduction of carbon emissions. To achieve this, it is necessary to increase the proportion of energy generated from renewable sources, such as wind power. The Sakhalin region has all the potential for this. It is also important to improve the reliability of electricity services provided to the population and sectors of the economy of the region. The electricity grid on the island of Sakhalin is isolated from the continent, and when any generation failure occurs, it cannot depend on the energy supply from abroad, so we pay special attention to the diversification of energy sources. “
