The Paderborn classroom becomes an escape room

Date:

“The game has a lot to do with education and can be used inside and outside the classroom to promote social and communication skills, problem-solving thinking, creativity and even physical condition,” emphasized the representatives of the three organizers, the head Department Annette Mühlenhoff from the Paderborn district, HNF-CEO Dr. Jochen Viehoff and school inspector Julia Schlueter from the district school authority. Together they invite students, parents, teachers and anyone interested to the theme week workshops and conferences.

From Monday, May 16 to Saturday, May 21, the Heinz Nixdorf Museum Forum and online will be about games and education. It shows, for example, how a classroom can be turned into an escape room with analog and digital puzzles or how storytelling computer games can be integrated into literature lessons. Integration through barrier-free gaming is also a theme, as is a look at neighboring Denmark, where online gaming has long been a part of daily lessons.

Do the games only work in front of the computer? Not in the workshop at the Ahorn Sportpark. Teachers show how computer games like Fortnite or Mario Kart can be played in school lessons. Not only does this get students and their teachers moving in a sporty way, but it also opens up new ways to talk to young people about the dangers and opportunities of online gaming.

At the end of the theme week, the organizers invite children and young people to a special event – a “Game Jam”. During the two-day workshop on Friday and Saturday, participants develop and program their own game with graphics, music, sound, and an exciting story.

“For as long as there have been computers, there have been computer games. The game is fun and opens up many opportunities to rediscover and redesign education and learning. We hope that many interested people will join us on this exciting journey,” say Mühlenhoff, Viehoff and Schlueter.

Participation in the workshops and conferences is free for all those interested. Only a fee of ten euros is charged for the Game Jam. Pre-registration is required and is now possible at www.bildungsregion-paderborn.de.
