480Hz on laptop: Alienware delivers highest refresh rate to date

Dell is the first manufacturer to offer a notebook display with a very high Update frequency 480 Hz, further reducing motion blur. This display option is now available on Alienware m17 R5 and x17 R2 series notebooks.

Both the Alienware m17 R5 and the Alienware x17 R2 are now also available with a 480 Hz screen, as announced by Dell.

Motion blur is further reduced

The high refresh rate should display moving images even more smoothly and further reduce streaking (ghosting) than is already the case with 240Hz or 360Hz. The time it takes to display the next image is reduces from 4.2 ms to 2.1 ms compared to 240 Hz and is therefore halved.

However, in absolute terms, the difference is very small and debates are likely to follow as to whether this is still noticeable. The experts from blurbustersthat already years ago I tested a prototype at 480 Hzbut for sure 480hz again visibly reduces motion blur.

In any case, the screens set the new standard for uncompromising (professional) gamers. Dell also points to the latter:

Ambitious e-athletes in particular appreciate the benefits of a 480 Hz display’s very high refresh rates.

The 480 Hz screens on Dell laptops offer a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (Full HD) with a diagonal of 17.3 inches and are specified with a response time of 3 milliseconds. However, the manufacturer does not say anything about the type of panel (TN, IPS…). Features such as AMD FreeSync, Nvidia G-Sync, and Advanced Optimus technology are supported to switch from integrated GPU to dedicated GPU.

Probably TN panels from AUO

Even if confirmation is still pending, the displays will most likely come from manufacturer AUO, which only introduced the first 480Hz panels for laptops and monitors as part of Display Week in May. These are TN panels whose liquid crystals switch particularly quickly.
