The German power grid has been attacked and spied on by Russian hackers. The attackers are said to have stolen sensitive information.
According to a media report, Russian hackers attacked the German power grid with an espionage campaign. An alleged perpetrator has been identified, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk reported Thursday. An arrest warrant has been issued for the man. It is said that in the summer of 2017 he hacked into the network of the company Netcom BW, which belongs to the energy company EnBW.
This made it possible to access Internet traffic. Control of the electricity and gas grid was not affected, cites the EnBW report. According to the US Department of Justice, the man is said to be part of a hacker group working for the Russian secret service FSB. They also turned to other energy companies.
It is unclear how many business networks the group has penetrated. The authorities were able to at least partially monitor the hackers’ Internet traffic because one of the servers used is in Germany.
Hackers are also said to have hacked and slightly modified strategically important websites to access sensitive information such as login details. Among other things, a company that develops websites for energy providers is affected.
