As a recently filed patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment reveals, PlayStation makers are experimenting with software or technology that could take the pause feature to the next level. Previously, a certain amount of time had to elapse without any input being made for a game to kick into action and automatically pause the game.
This is where the Sony Interactive Entertainment patent comes in that could, among other things, ensure that the game directly recognizes if the user is absent or has just put the controller aside for a moment.

To determine this, a technical solution is described that is based on various sensors of modern controllers or systems. “The principles allow the game system or the game to determine if the user has left the game or is just on a short break. This allows the simulation system to act immediately without having to wait for a keyboard absence timer to expire,” according to the official patent description.
It is further explained that the technology uses various parameters such as controller movements, wireless signal strength, controller microphones or possible cameras to determine if the user is still close to the gaming device. After a short period without warning, the game will slow down, and after another short period, it will stop automatically. On the contrary, the game could continue automatically if you are present.

At the same time, the console could switch to a more energy efficient mode when the user is away. It’s certainly not an entirely uninteresting feature in view of today’s energy costs. However, it should be noted that it would certainly not be without privacy and data protection concerns if a system used acoustic and visual signals to determine the position or whereabouts of the user in the vicinity of the controller.
