Roguelite Kingdom Builder Adds New Desert Region, Bosses and Gameplay Modes
Indie strategy hit “The King Is Watching” is set to receive a major new content update later this month, as developer Hypnohead and publisher tinyBuild announced the upcoming launch of the “Shifting Sands” expansion for PC.
The update arrives June 11 on Steam and introduces a large desert-themed region, new enemies, bosses, gameplay modifiers and expanded replay systems for the award-nominated roguelite kingdom builder, which has sold more than 500,000 copies worldwide.
Known for combining kingdom management mechanics with roguelite progression systems, “The King Is Watching” has steadily built an audience among PC strategy fans since its release, particularly on Steam where indie management and survival titles continue to perform strongly.
New Desert Biome Introduces Dynamic Battlefield Hazards
The centerpiece of the “Shifting Sands” update is a mystical desert environment where the terrain itself becomes part of the challenge.
According to the developers, shifting sandstorms can engulf both enemies and allied units before reappearing across three different eras, creating unpredictable battlefield conditions during each run.
Players entering the new biome will encounter a mix of returning enemies from earlier maps as well as four newly introduced bosses designed specifically for the desert setting.
The update also introduces the Fennecs, a new enemy class adapted to survive the harsh conditions of the sands. The creatures are expected to add new combat and tactical challenges for players attempting higher-difficulty runs.
Danger Level System Adds Greater Challenge and Rewards
The “Shifting Sands” update expands progression systems through the addition of a new Danger Level modifier.
The mechanic allows players to increase the overall difficulty of their kingdom-building runs in exchange for enhanced rewards and unlockable content.
Higher danger levels can reward players with:
New Artifacts
Special items that alter gameplay mechanics and improve kingdom strategies during runs.
Additional Unit Types
New combat and support units designed to create more build diversity and tactical flexibility.
Advisors and Spells
Expanded court management systems and magical abilities intended to deepen progression and replayability.
The update reflects a broader trend among roguelite strategy games, where scalable difficulty systems help extend long-term player engagement while encouraging experimentation with different builds and playstyles.
Endless Mode and Free Play Receive Major Rework
In addition to the new desert map, the update significantly expands gameplay options through revisions to Endless Mode and the introduction of a new Free Play mode.
The reworked Endless Mode aims to provide longer-term progression and increased replay value for experienced players seeking more difficult survival runs.
Meanwhile, the new Free Play mode allows players to revisit previously unlocked maps while applying the new danger modifiers across different environments.
That flexibility gives players more control over customizing their runs and experimenting with strategies outside the game’s standard progression structure.
Indie Strategy Genre Continues Strong Growth on PC
“The King Is Watching” joins a growing category of indie strategy and roguelite games that have gained significant traction on PC storefronts in recent years.
Games blending city-building, survival management and procedural progression mechanics have become increasingly popular among players looking for replayable strategy experiences outside the traditional AAA market.
tinyBuild, known for publishing a wide range of independent titles across PC and consoles, continues to expand its strategy-focused catalog through partnerships with smaller development studios.
The “Shifting Sands” update for “The King Is Watching” launches June 11 for PC via Steam.
