First Major Development Plan Introduces New Biome, Expanded Dungeons, and Gameplay Improvements
The developers behind the co-op survival townbuilder Romestead have revealed the game’s first post-launch roadmap, outlining a series of updates designed to expand gameplay and improve the player experience. The announcement comes just one month after the title entered Steam Early Access, where it has already surpassed 400,000 copies sold worldwide.
Developed by Swedish studio Beartwigs and published by Three Friends, the roadmap highlights both near-term quality-of-life improvements and larger content additions planned for future updates.
Roadmap Focuses on Performance, New Content, and Player Feedback
The newly announced roadmap, titled “Romestead Act 1: The Fall of Rome,” details the next phase of development for the multiplayer survival crafting game.
The first wave of updates, expected by the end of summer, centers on improving overall gameplay performance and accessibility. Planned additions include full controller support through Steam Input, network optimizations aimed at enhancing multiplayer stability, and official Steam Deck verification to expand compatibility for handheld gaming.
Developers also plan to introduce more varied dungeon designs, along with gameplay balancing improvements, quality-of-life enhancements, and additional bug fixes based on community feedback.
Fourth Biome Will Expand the World of Romestead
Looking further ahead, the development team is preparing one of the game’s largest content updates with the introduction of a fourth biome.
The new area will take players back to a familiar location within the game’s world, where they will rebuild settlements while facing new environmental hazards and enemies. The expansion will also include additional building tiers, new armor sets, enemy varieties, dungeon types, and more challenging boss encounters.
The studio said further details about upcoming content will be announced in future roadmap updates.
Early Access Development Continues
Since launching in Steam Early Access on May 26, Romestead has received multiple updates each week as developers continue refining the game based on player feedback.
The latest roadmap represents the beginning of the game’s long-term development strategy, with additional roadmaps planned as development progresses.
A Fantasy Take on the Fall of Ancient Rome
Romestead blends survival crafting, town building, and cooperative multiplayer gameplay in a fantasy version of Ancient Rome. Players are tasked with rebuilding a fallen Roman settlement while defending it against undead enemies and mythical creatures.
The game can be played solo or cooperatively, allowing players to gather resources, construct settlements, explore dangerous regions, and uncover the mysteries surrounding the collapse of their empire within a pixel-art world inspired by classical mythology.
Studios Behind the Project
Three Friends is an independent Swedish publisher founded by industry veterans who previously worked on successful titles including Minecraft, Valheim, and Deep Rock Galactic. The publisher focuses on supporting Nordic game developers through funding, production guidance, and publishing expertise.
Developer Beartwigs, based in Linköping, Sweden, specializes in pixel-art games and created Romestead as its debut title. The studio combines retro-inspired visuals with modern cooperative survival gameplay centered on rebuilding civilization after the mythical fall of Rome.
Conclusion
With more than 400,000 copies sold during its first month in Early Access, Romestead is continuing to expand its content through a steady development roadmap. Upcoming improvements to performance, accessibility, and multiplayer gameplay, along with the addition of a new biome and expanded exploration features, signal the developers’ ongoing commitment to growing the game as it evolves through Early Access.
