Upcoming DLC Adds Six Historical Campaigns, New Commander, and Expanded Battlefield Units
Fans of tactical World War II strategy games will soon have new content to explore as publisher Kalypso Media and developer Kite Games prepare to release Sudden Strike 5 – France: Road to Liberation on July 30. The downloadable expansion continues the game’s post-launch roadmap with a campaign inspired by one of the pivotal Allied operations of World War II, while introducing new missions, units, and strategic gameplay features.
The DLC will be available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
Operation Dragoon Takes Center Stage
Set in August 1944, the expansion is based on Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France that helped accelerate the liberation of the country during World War II.
Players will experience six new historical missions, evenly divided between the Allied and Axis factions. The Allied campaign begins with the assault on Camel Beach before advancing through the liberation of Toulon and culminating in the capture of Hill 300, where players must cut off German retreat routes.
The Axis campaign presents the conflict from the German perspective, challenging players to organize defensive operations while protecting evacuation routes against advancing Allied forces.
New Commander Brings Additional Tactical Options
The expansion introduces Jean de Lattre de Tassigny as a new playable commander, giving players access to a mobility-focused leadership style.
The commander arrives alongside two new doctrine cards—Maquis Mobilization and Crew Vehicle Training—which provide additional tactical flexibility through new upgrade extensions. These additions are designed to give players more strategic choices when planning battlefield operations.
New Military Units Join the Fight
The DLC also expands the game’s military roster with more than six new units and unit types.
Among the additions are the Allied destroyer USS Edison, the German SdKfz. 302 Goliath remote-controlled demolition vehicle, French infantry units, and several new vehicles, including amphibious combat equipment. These reinforcements are intended to broaden tactical possibilities across the new campaign missions.
Free Co-Op Mode Arriving Alongside Ongoing Updates
Beyond the paid expansion, Kite Games continues to support Sudden Strike 5 with free updates outlined in its post-launch roadmap.
One of the most significant additions is the introduction of Co-Op Mode, scheduled to launch as a free update for all players in early July.
The development team has also recently released a quality-of-life update featuring several gameplay improvements, including the ability to remove individual units from trenches, additional loading-screen tutorial tips, expanded visibility settings, and numerous bug fixes and gameplay adjustments.
Orchestral Soundtrack Highlights Battlefield Atmosphere
As part of the expansion announcement, Kalypso Media also released a behind-the-scenes feature showcasing the Budapest Art Orchestra performing the main musical theme for Sudden Strike 5. The orchestral performance emphasizes the dramatic tone and large-scale battles that define the real-time tactics series.
Expansion Pricing and Availability
Sudden Strike 5 – France: Road to Liberation launches on July 30, 2026, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and PlayStation 5.
The expansion will be priced at $14.99 in the United States.
Conclusion
With six new historical missions, additional battlefield units, a French commander, and expanded strategic options, France: Road to Liberation represents the next major content update for Sudden Strike 5. Combined with ongoing free updates such as Co-Op Mode and gameplay improvements, the expansion reflects Kite Games’ continued commitment to expanding the World War II strategy title following its launch.
