League of Legends Classic Brings Back the Early Days of LoL in Patch 26.15

Date:

Riot Games Unveils Nostalgia-Focused Mode Featuring Classic Champions, Summoner’s Rift, and Original Gameplay Systems

League of Legends players will soon have the opportunity to revisit the game’s early years. Riot Games announced that League of Legends Classic will launch on July 29 as part of Patch 26.15, introducing a new experience inspired by the title’s formative era while incorporating select modern improvements.

The mode recreates many of the features that defined League of Legends between 2009 and 2013, including classic champions, items, runes, masteries, and the original Summoner’s Rift map. Rather than reproducing a single historical patch, Riot says the mode combines some of the most memorable elements from the game’s early years.

A Return to the Gameplay That Defined Early League of Legends

Classic Combat and Strategic Decision-Making

League of Legends has evolved significantly over the past decade, with modern gameplay featuring faster pacing, greater champion mobility, and increasingly complex mechanics.

League of Legends Classic aims to recreate an earlier style of play, where champions had more clearly defined strengths and weaknesses and strategic decision-making often played a larger role in match outcomes.

Players can expect combat that more closely resembles the game’s original pace, encouraging thoughtful positioning and tactical planning.

Rebuilt Summoner’s Rift With Modern Visual Improvements

The experience includes a recreation of the original Summoner’s Rift battlefield. While maintaining the map’s classic design, Riot has updated lighting, textures, and shadow effects to improve visual clarity for today’s players.

Paul Bellezza, Executive Producer of League of Legends, said the project was driven by both player demand and internal enthusiasm at Riot Games.

“LoL Classic is something personal. You’ve been asking for it for years, and the truth is that a large part of the Riot team also missed the feeling that LoL conveyed in its early days. We feel a lot of nostalgia. We’re not trying to recreate the old days exactly. We want LoL Classic to satisfy that desire to play and, at the same time, bring something new. Essentially, it’s about paying homage to the roots of LoL. Whether you’ve been playing since the beginning or you’re coming back after years, we want you to feel at home.”

Classic Progression System and Game Modes

Multiple Queues Available at Launch

When League of Legends Classic launches, players will have access to:

  • PvP Draft Queue
  • Co-op vs. AI
  • Custom Games

The mode introduces its own progression path called Classic Levels, which will be available to all players at no additional cost.

Players will earn experience by participating in matches and can unlock rewards including runes, masteries, Influence Points (IP), Blue Essence (BE), cosmetics, and other content tied specifically to Classic mode.

Upon reaching Level 10, players begin a progression journey that advances through ranks ranging from Salt to Legend.

60 Champions Available on Day One

Classic Champion Kits Return

League of Legends Classic will launch with 60 champions, including the original 40 champions available during the game’s early years and 20 additional champions released between 2009 and 2013.

Champions will use their pre-rework abilities and kits, allowing players to experience many iconic versions of characters that have since undergone significant updates.

Players who already own these champions in League of Legends will automatically gain access to them in Classic mode. Additional champions can be unlocked through progression or purchased through the in-game store.

To better capture the original experience, Riot has updated champion models to reflect their classic appearances while adjusting animations, sound effects, and visual effects where necessary.

Classic Items, Runes, and Masteries Make a Comeback

Memorable Builds Return

Many fan-favorite items and item combinations from the early years of League of Legends will return in Classic mode.

The original rune and mastery systems are also being reintroduced, though Riot has simplified the unlocking process. Players will gain access to additional runes, mastery options, and rune pages through gameplay progression.

Default rune and mastery setups will be provided to ensure players can compete immediately while working toward expanded customization options.

Season Passes, Skins, and New Cosmetic Content

League of Legends Classic will feature dedicated Classic Season Passes, available in both free and premium versions.

Rewards include:

  • Influence Points (IP)
  • Blue Essence (BE)
  • Rune Pages
  • Emotes
  • Titles
  • Classic Skins
  • Portrait Cosmetics

Classic skins are designed to recreate champion appearances from the 2009–2013 era and can be unlocked using Classic Skin Tokens earned through gameplay or purchased through the store.

A new cosmetic category called Portraits will also be introduced. These illustrations appear on loading screens and feature alternative artistic interpretations of champions, ranging from playful sketches to stylized artwork.

The Council Gives Players a Voice in Development

Community Voting System Introduced

One of the most notable additions to League of Legends Classic is a new feature called The Council.

The system allows players to vote on selected future development decisions, including which champions should be added to Classic mode, which skins should be created, and certain gameplay-related changes.

While Riot will retain control over game balance and overall direction, The Council is intended to give dedicated players a greater role in shaping the mode’s future.

Voting access is unlocked through Classic progression, and players who spend more time in the mode can earn additional voting influence.

Conclusion

With the launch of League of Legends Classic, Riot Games is tapping into more than a decade of player nostalgia while introducing systems designed for modern audiences. By bringing back classic champions, original gameplay mechanics, iconic items, and a community-driven development model, the company is offering longtime fans a chance to revisit the foundations of one of the most influential PC games ever created while welcoming newer players to experience a defining chapter in League of Legends history.
