‘God of War’ Recasts Kratos After Ryan Hurst Suffers On-Set Injury During Prime Video Production

Date:

Amazon Prime Video’s highly anticipated adaptation of the popular God of War video game franchise is moving forward with a major casting change after lead actor Ryan Hurst suffered a serious injury while filming in Canada. The production has reportedly decided to recast the role of Kratos following an extended recovery timeline that could not be accommodated within the show’s production schedule.

Ryan Hurst Injured While Filming Action Sequence

According to reports, Hurst sustained a torn bicep while performing a stunt during filming in Vancouver, British Columbia, where production on the fantasy drama began earlier this year.

Sources indicate that the actor underwent surgery following the injury and is currently recovering. Production on God of War was halted immediately after the incident and remains paused.

The injury comes after months of preparation for the physically demanding role. Hurst reportedly gained approximately 40 pounds of muscle and underwent extensive training to portray Kratos, the iconic Spartan warrior at the center of the franchise.

Recovery Timeline Creates Production Challenges

While Hurst’s health and recovery remain the priority, the expected rehabilitation period reportedly created scheduling difficulties for the production.

Medical recovery from a significant bicep tear requiring surgery can take several months, with full strength often returning much later. Given the intense action requirements of the role, sources say it was unlikely Hurst would have been able to safely resume filming until sometime in 2027.

As a result, producers made the decision to recast the lead role in order to keep the project on track.

Preparations for the next phase of production are expected to begin in mid-August, with filming scheduled to resume in October.

Completed Episodes Expected to Be Reshot

The series, created by writer, executive producer, and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, began filming in February under a two-season order from Prime Video.

The production plan calls for both seasons to be filmed back-to-back, and sources say that strategy remains unchanged despite the setback.

At the time of Hurst’s injury, four episodes had reportedly been fully completed. However, those episodes are expected to be reshot with the actor who ultimately takes over the role of Kratos.

Child Actor Factor Limits Use of Existing Footage

One challenge facing the production is the age of co-star Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, Kratos’ son.

Because child actors can change noticeably in appearance over relatively short periods of time, producers are expected to have limited ability to reuse footage that was already completed before the injury occurred.

Story Follows Kratos and Atreus

Based on Sony’s bestselling video game franchise, God of War follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey across a mythological world to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye.

The story centers on their effort to scatter her ashes while navigating dangerous challenges and evolving family dynamics. Throughout the journey, Kratos attempts to guide his son into becoming a wiser god, while Atreus encourages his father to embrace his humanity.

The cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

Rare Situation for a Television Production

Lead-actor recasting due to an on-set injury remains uncommon in major television productions.

One notable example occurred in 2020 when O’Shea Jackson Jr. replaced Winston Duke as the lead in Apple TV+’s basketball drama Swagger after Duke suffered an injury early in production.

Another case involved Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, which suspended production for several months after star John Cho sustained a serious knee injury during filming in 2019. Following surgery and rehabilitation, Cho eventually returned when production resumed.

Major Project Continues Despite Setback

Despite the unexpected production interruption, God of War remains one of Prime Video’s most closely watched upcoming projects. The series is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Ronald D. Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.

Executive producers include Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers, while Frederick E.O. Toye directed the first two episodes.

For Hurst, the news comes during what would otherwise have been a high-profile moment in his career. The actor also appears in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, which is set to debut this week. As production prepares to move forward with a new Kratos, the industry will be watching closely to see how one of gaming’s most recognizable characters is reintroduced on screen.
