Culdcept The First Launches on Steam, Bringing the Classic SEGA Saturn Strategy Game to English-Speaking Players

Date:

Fans of classic strategy games can now experience one of the SEGA Saturn’s most acclaimed titles on modern hardware. Culdcept The First, an enhanced version of the 1997 strategy game, is now available on Steam with English language support, updated quality-of-life features, and plans for additional console releases later this year.

Classic Strategy Game Returns on PC

Sweden-based publisher Clear River Games, in partnership with developer City Connection and series creator Omiya Soft, has officially released Culdcept The First on Steam.

Originally launched for the SEGA Saturn in 1997, the game built a dedicated following in Japan for its distinctive blend of board game mechanics, collectible card gameplay, and turn-based strategy. The new PC version marks the first time the title has been officially made available to English-speaking players.

Priced at $29.99 in the United States, the enhanced edition introduces several modern improvements while preserving the original gameplay experience.

A Blend of Board Games, Card Battles, and Strategy

Players Build Decks and Compete Across Fantasy Maps

Unlike traditional strategy games, Culdcept The First combines movement across a game board with collectible card mechanics.

Players take on the role of a Cepter, wielding a customized deck of 50 cards while exploring the fantasy world known as Culdra Space, a realm created by the goddess Culdra.

Dice rolls determine movement across the map, while players summon creatures, capture territory, and use spell cards to influence battles or disrupt opponents’ strategies. Success depends on balancing tactical positioning with careful deck construction throughout each match.

Enhanced Edition Adds Modern Features

Quality-of-Life Improvements Update the Classic Experience

The Steam version introduces several new features designed to make the nearly three-decade-old game more accessible for modern audiences.

Among the additions are:

  • English subtitles alongside the original Japanese language option
  • Quick Save and Load, allowing players to save progress at virtually any point
  • Checkpoint rewind, enabling players to return to previously reached forts or castles
  • Reveal Hands, an optional feature that displays both players’ cards throughout a match
  • Bonus Pack rewards that increase the number of cards earned after battles, with the option to enable or disable the feature

Players can also freely switch between Japanese and English language settings.

Steam Release Marks the Beginning of a Wider Rollout

While the game is now available for PC through Steam, Clear River Games plans to expand its availability later this year.

Console versions are expected for:

  • Nintendo Switch
  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S

No specific console release dates have been announced.

A Cult Classic Reaches a Broader Audience

For many longtime strategy fans, Culdcept has remained one of the most notable titles that never received a full English localization. Its combination of tabletop strategy, deck building, and fantasy storytelling earned the original game a loyal following despite its limited international availability.

The new release gives English-speaking players an opportunity to experience the original entry in the series while benefiting from gameplay refinements that reduce friction without significantly changing its core mechanics.

Conclusion

With its Steam launch, Culdcept The First introduces a new generation of players to a strategy classic that has remained largely inaccessible outside Japan for decades. Featuring official English localization, modern gameplay enhancements, and additional console versions planned for later this year, the release represents a significant milestone for both longtime fans and newcomers interested in classic strategy and card-based games.
