SEC Weighs Boycotts, Possible Expulsion if LSU Uses Former Professional Players, Report Says

Date:

LSU could face unprecedented sanctions from the Southeastern Conference, including game boycotts, probation or possible expulsion, if the university moves forward with plans to add former professional athletes to its teams this fall, according to a published report.

SEC Officials Reportedly Discussing Action Against LSU

Yahoo Sports senior college football reporter Ross Dellenger cited multiple sources “with knowledge of the conversations” taking place among senior officials at SEC universities.

“The risk is enormous for LSU,” Dellenger quoted an anonymous staff member from a rival school as saying.

According to the report, multiple SEC officials believe intervention may be necessary to preserve competitive balance within one of college sports’ most influential conferences. LSU has reportedly received commitments from at least three football players who previously signed professional contracts.

Conference leaders are said to be considering several possible responses, including refusing to compete against LSU, placing the Tigers’ athletic program on probation or removing the university from the SEC.

Discussions involving SEC university presidents and attorneys remain in the early stages. Spokespeople for LSU and the conference declined to comment for Dellenger’s report.

Law Firm Retained for Potential Court Battle

The SEC has reportedly retained Stone Pigman Walther Wittmann, a New Orleans-based law firm, to represent its interests if the eligibility dispute leads to a federal lawsuit.

No conference action is expected before a Thursday court hearing in Baton Rouge. The hearing centers on a Louisiana eligibility case that created a potential pathway for certain former professional athletes to return to college competition.

A court order requires the SEC and NCAA to explain whether newly established penalties connected to their restrictions on former professional players conflict with an earlier judicial ruling. The organizations must also address whether those penalties could place them in contempt of court.

The judge could preserve a temporary restraining order preventing the SEC from penalizing schools that use a player who previously signed with an NFL team. The court could also reverse that decision, potentially allowing the conference to enforce its eligibility rules.

Lane Kiffin Defends LSU’s Roster Strategy

LSU football coach Lane Kiffin addressed the controversy during his weekly news conference Monday, saying his responsibility is to make decisions that benefit the players already inside the program.

“I feel like my decision should always be made in the best interest of the players that sit in this team room,” Kiffin said. “And not for my reputation and how the decisions play in the national media or other fan bases. I’ve never been that way and that could be wrong.

“… I met with our leadership committee of our players. And I asked them, ‘It’s your team, what do you want to do? If these players are allowed to be added to rosters, what do you want to do?’ And every one of them was emphatic about, ‘They can help us win, bring ‘em.’ … One of them said, ‘Hey, this is how it works at the next level, and this is how the real world works.’”

Kiffin also emphasized that LSU intends to follow conference directives and has maintained regular communication with SEC officials.

“Myself, as the head coach of football, and will we football follow SEC orders? I said it earlier this morning when asked. Of course we will. … I have been in communication daily with the SEC to make sure we are complying with the SEC rules.”

Court Decision Could Reshape College Eligibility Rules

The dispute raises broader questions about the boundary between professional and college athletics at a time when the traditional amateur model is undergoing significant legal and financial change.

A ruling favoring LSU could allow more athletes with professional experience to pursue college eligibility. It could also force conferences and the NCAA to reconsider rules governing players who previously signed contracts with professional teams.

For now, the SEC’s reported options remain under discussion. Thursday’s hearing could determine whether LSU may move ahead without conference penalties—and whether the dispute develops into a wider challenge to eligibility standards across college sports.
