Roguecraft DX Brings Nostalgic Turn-Based Roguelike Action to PC

Date:

Roguecraft DX, a turn-based roguelike inspired by the golden age of isometric games, is now available on PC through Steam. The dungeon-crawling adventure combines retro visuals, procedurally changing environments and Lovecraftian enemies with runs designed to last about 30 to 40 minutes.

Developed by Badger Punch Games, the game sends players into the dangerous dungeons of Mordecoom, where choosing the right class, collecting treasure and surviving unpredictable enemies are central to each attempt.

Three Classes Offer Different Ways to Explore Mordecoom

Players begin by choosing from three classic character classes: Warrior, Wizard and Rogue. Each offers a distinct play style and different level of difficulty.

The Warrior emphasizes physical strength and direct attacks, while the Wizard relies on magical abilities to eliminate enemies. The Rogue favors mobility and stealthier tactics, including teleporting behind opponents for close-range attacks.

The action is accompanied by an original Amiga mod tracker soundtrack, reinforcing the game’s deliberate retro presentation.

Despite its old-school appearance, Roguecraft DX is structured around shorter play sessions. Individual adventures generally take between 30 and 40 minutes, allowing players to complete a run without the longer time commitment associated with some traditional dungeon crawlers.

Every Roguecraft DX Run Changes the Dungeon

As with other roguelikes, failure is part of the progression. Whether a run ends in victory or defeat, the dungeon changes before the next attempt.

New layouts, hidden areas, treasures, potions and enemies can appear during subsequent runs, requiring players to adjust their strategies rather than memorize a single route.

Enemies range from Lovecraftian creatures to considerably less intimidating — but apparently still hostile — chickens. The randomized structure is intended to keep repeated trips through Mordecoom unpredictable.

Chicken Run Mode Turns Players Into Chicklathotep

One of the game’s more unusual challenges is Chicken Run mode.

Players enter the dungeon as a chicken with only two hit points, creating a significantly more dangerous starting situation. Finding a golden egg, however, triggers a transformation into the monstrous Chicklathotep.

The transformed creature gains supernatural poultry-themed powers that can be used against the dungeon’s Lovecraftian inhabitants. The mode offers a humorous alternative to the game’s three standard character classes while maintaining its focus on survival.

Endless Dungeon Adds a High-Score Challenge

Beyond standard runs and Chicken Run mode, Roguecraft DX includes an Endless Dungeon designed to test how long players can survive.

Instead of reaching a conventional endpoint, players continue battling enemies while attempting to increase their high score. The mode gives experienced players another reason to experiment with strategies after becoming familiar with the main dungeon.

Across its different modes, the game combines procedural layouts with items, potions and encounters that change from run to run.

Roguecraft DX Launches on Steam for $11.99

Roguecraft DX is available now for PC through Steam at a U.S. price of $11.99. The game launched with a 20% introductory discount.

It is also being offered in a launch bundle with KAZ, a grid-based rhythm roguelike developed by Kalinarm and published by HAKURO.

The release builds its identity around a mix of classic computer-game aesthetics and modern roguelike design. Visual elements evoke an earlier era of CRT monitors and vintage gaming hardware, while shorter sessions and multiple game modes are intended to make repeated runs more accessible to contemporary players.

With three traditional classes, procedurally changing dungeons, an Endless Dungeon and the unconventional Chicken Run mode, Roguecraft DX offers a modern take on old-school turn-based dungeon crawling while maintaining a distinctly nostalgic style.
