Dead As Disco, the rhythm-driven action brawler from Brain Jar Games, has surpassed 500,000 players as the studio rolls out its largest Early Access update to date. Released Sept. 29, the update introduces a new Idol boss named Dahlia, along with additional music, arenas, enemies, abilities and challenges.
The milestone comes as Dead As Disco continues its run in Steam Early Access, where the game has received a 97% “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating across more than 14,000 user reviews.
Dead As Disco Adds New Idol Boss Dahlia
The centerpiece of the latest update is Dahlia, also known as “The Lady of Loss,” a former pianist and dancer who becomes one of Charlie Disco’s major opponents.
Dahlia appears at The Nightshade, a venue combining the atmosphere of a nightclub with a botanical garden. Her multi-stage boss battle begins amid colorful vegetation before shifting dramatically when she enters her Death Form, transforming the surroundings into a landscape of magma, embers and ash.
New Flamecho Enemy and Burn Status Effect
The update also introduces Flamecho, a new enemy capable of raining fire onto the battlefield before charging players with an unblockable attack followed by a counterable move.
A new Burn status effect adds another rhythm-based combat mechanic, dealing damage in time with the beat.
Defeating Dahlia unlocks her Skill Tree for Charlie. One of the new abilities, Phantom Dance, enhances Charlie’s dodge and leaves behind a damaging “Pyroette” that can be detonated with a follow-up attack.
Five New Songs Join the Dead As Disco Soundtrack
Music remains central to Dead As Disco, where punches, dodges and combos are synchronized with the beat.
The Dahlia update expands the soundtrack with five songs. Dahlia’s signature track, “La Pantera,” incorporates Spanish piano and Latin-inspired musical elements.
The five additions are “La Pantera (Radio Edit),” “La Pantera (Boss Remix),” “Sugar and Spice,” “Suavemente” and “Kumbala.”
New Arenas, Challenges and Dance Moves Arrive
Beyond the new boss encounter, the update adds a complete story level and two arenas: The Nightshade and Obsidian Overture.
Players also gain access to eight new Challenges, Dahlia-themed cosmetics and memorabilia for Charlie, and additional dance moves including Salsa Fan, Honest Hips and Bad Boy Boogie.
Flamecho, Smoking Stan and Dahlia have been added as enemy options in Infinite Disco. The mode also receives new arena-swap triggers and other improvements.
The Encore has been expanded with new Dahlia quests and dialogue.
Dead As Disco Continues to Expand in Early Access
Since entering Early Access in May, Dead As Disco has received several substantial updates aimed at expanding both its story content and customizable rhythm-based combat.
Infinite Disco Gains Auto BPM Detection
Auto BPM detection has been added to Infinite Disco, automatically identifying a song’s beats per minute and offset to make it easier for players to fight along with their own music.
Achievements are also now available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with previous play history counting toward qualifying achievements.
Intense Mode has meanwhile expanded to every Story level. The mode increases enemy damage, tightens timing windows and removes healing hearts and checkpoints while introducing additional combat modifiers.
Infinite Disco has received more arenas, enemies and arena-swap options, while Custom Challenges now feature leaderboards, additional modifiers, more enemies and improvements to challenge playlists.
Brain Jar Games has also introduced controller button remapping alongside combat, user-interface and quality-of-life changes based on player feedback.
Golden Joystick Awards Nomination
Alongside the player milestone and Dahlia update, Dead As Disco has been nominated in the Best Early Access Game category at the 2026 Golden Joystick Awards.
