Classic arcade characters Bub and Bob are returning on Nintendo Switch 2 with an expanded version of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron is Back!, combining four-player local co-op, 200 levels and the new Stardrop Mountain expansion.
Clear River Games and TAITO Corporation announced Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron is Back! Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Stardrop Mountain on September 30, bringing the long-running action-puzzle series to Nintendo’s latest hardware with new content and Switch 2-specific features.
Bubble Bobble Returns to Nintendo Switch 2
The Bubble Bobble franchise began in arcades in 1986, introducing players to bubble dragons Bub and Bob as they worked through action-puzzle stages filled with enemies and platforming challenges.
The latest edition builds on Bubble Bobble 4 Friends, originally released in 2019. Bub and Bob are joined by Peb and Pab, allowing up to four players to participate through local couch co-op.
Players can also tackle the adventure alone, using bubbles to trap enemies, navigate stages and reach otherwise inaccessible platforms.
Stardrop Mountain Adds New Stages
The major addition to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition is Stardrop Mountain, an expansion featuring a new collection of stages based on the series’ familiar bubble-blowing gameplay.
The expansion also features Invaduh, a returning villain who pursues players and attempts to interfere with their progress.
Stardrop Mountain joins content from The Baron is Back!, an earlier expansion that introduced additional stages and brought back Baron von Blubba, the persistent enemy from the original arcade game.
Together, the content gives players 200 levels to complete as they work toward defeating the evil magician Bonner and his henchmen.
Classic Bubble Bobble Mechanics Remain at the Center
Despite the new stages and features, the core mechanics remain closely connected to the arcade original.
Players blow bubbles to trap enemies before bursting them. Bubbles can also serve as temporary platforms, helping Bub, Bob and their companions reach higher areas and move through increasingly complicated stages.
Air currents affect movement throughout the levels, requiring players to determine how bubbles will travel and develop strategies for navigating each environment.
The classic E-X-T-E-N-D bubbles also return. Collecting them during standard stages allows players to activate and upgrade skills.
Extra Lives Available in Expansion Content
The reward system changes when players enter The Baron is Back! and Stardrop Mountain content.
Instead of using E-X-T-E-N-D bubbles primarily for skill progression, players can earn extra lives by popping bubbles in these areas.
With no two stages designed exactly alike, the game places an emphasis on learning individual level layouts and finding effective ways to use bubbles, platforms and air currents.
Original 1986 Bubble Bobble Arcade Game Is Included
The package also includes the complete original Bubble Bobble arcade game from 1986.
Its inclusion gives players an opportunity to experience the title that established Bub and Bob nearly four decades ago, including its recognizable music and original arcade gameplay.
For longtime fans, the original game provides a direct comparison between the franchise’s arcade roots and the expanded multiplayer design of the modern installment.
Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Adds HD Resolution and Camera Play
The Nintendo Switch 2 version will run at a resolution of 1920×1080, providing a full HD presentation of its colorful stages and characters.
The new edition also introduces Camera Play. Players can take a picture of themselves and their friends and bring those images into the game, where the selfies appear inside bubbles.
The feature adds another multiplayer-focused element to a game already designed around local cooperative play.
The combination of four-player couch co-op and the Switch 2-specific features gives the new release a stronger emphasis on shared play while retaining the puzzle-platforming mechanics associated with the series.
Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron is Back! Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Stardrop Mountain is expected to launch digitally for Nintendo Switch 2. A specific release date was not announced.
