R-Type Dimensions III is receiving a major update as publisher ININ continues efforts to address player feedback and bring the shoot-’em-up closer to the mechanics of the original R-Type III: The Third Lightning. The game’s third major patch introduces an Advanced Mode boss overhaul, gameplay refinements and additional stability and visual fixes.
ININ announced the update October 1, 2026, alongside another change: the R-Type Dimensions III digital artbook, previously limited to the Ultimate Edition on Steam, is now being added to the base game at no additional cost across all supported platforms.
R-Type Dimensions III Patch 3 Continues Improvement Initiative
ININ launched an improvement initiative in June after community concerns about the game, committing to a series of updates and a strengthened quality assurance process.
Three months later, the publisher has released the third major patch under that initiative.
Patches 1 and 2 addressed gameplay, collision detection, audio and visual issues. According to ININ, those changes placed particular emphasis on mechanical authenticity and bringing the experience closer to the original R-Type III: The Third Lightning.
Patch 3 continues that work with changes to gameplay systems, bosses, stability and visuals.
Advanced Mode Bosses Receive Major Changes
One of the most substantial parts of Patch 3 is an overhaul of boss behavior during Stages 5 and 6 in Advanced Mode.
The changes are intended to more closely reproduce the challenge and attack patterns associated with the original game.
Stage 5 bosses have been reworked across several areas, including their shot patterns, movement and speed.
Stage 6 boss Mother Bydo has also received adjustments covering all phases of the encounter.
A notable change involves the duration of Mother Bydo’s dynamic arms. Rather than relying on the previous fixed timer, the duration now scales according to player performance.
Free Digital Artbook Added to the Base Game
The update also expands access to the game’s digital artbook.
Previously available through the Ultimate Edition on Steam, the R-Type Dimensions III digital artbook is now included with the base game at no additional charge.
The change applies across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox and Steam.
The artbook contains artwork and historical material examining the history and legacy of the R-Type franchise.
ININ said the addition will not affect the base price of R-Type Dimensions III.
Gameplay, Visual and Stability Fixes Continue
Beyond the Advanced Mode boss changes, Patch 3 includes additional refinements to the game’s core systems.
The update contains stability and visual corrections as well as gameplay adjustments building on work introduced through the first two patches.
The broader series of updates has focused on addressing reported issues while improving the accuracy of gameplay elements inherited from R-Type III: The Third Lightning.
Community Feedback Helped Shape the Updates
ININ also acknowledged the role of the R-Type community during the three-month improvement process.
Players have documented problems, tested builds and participated in feedback discussions as the publisher worked through the game’s post-launch updates.
According to ININ, those reports directly contributed to changes made across the three patches.
The publisher thanked players who reported issues and continued following the development of the updates, noting that community involvement had made a measurable difference in the improvements introduced so far.
Patch 3 Rolling Out Across Platforms
R-Type Dimensions III is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC through Steam.
Patch 3 is available now on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox. At the time of the announcement, the Nintendo Switch versions were expected to follow within the day after completing platform-specific certification.
