Indie publisher rokaplay and Austrian developer Mipumi Games have announced that A Game About Digging A Hole Together will launch December 4, 2026, bringing cooperative digging gameplay to PC and major gaming consoles. The release date was revealed during the ID@Xbox IGN Showcase, accompanied by a new trailer highlighting the game’s expanded multiplayer features.
The upcoming title builds on the success of A Game About Digging a Hole, a viral indie game that sold more than one million copies and reached the top 30 on Steam’s charts. The new version introduces four-player cooperative gameplay, additional tools, expanded environments, and technical improvements.
A Game About Digging A Hole Together Confirms December 4 Release Date
The game will launch simultaneously across several platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox on PC.
It will also be available through Xbox Game Pass at launch, providing subscribers with access through Microsoft’s gaming subscription service.
The announcement was made October 20 during the ID@Xbox IGN Showcase, where rokaplay and Mipumi Games presented a new trailer demonstrating the cooperative experience.
The official gameplay trailer is available on YouTube.
Four-Player Cooperative Gameplay Expands the Original Concept
The central gameplay mechanic remains straightforward: players dig into the ground, collect valuable materials, sell their discoveries, purchase upgrades, and continue excavating.
However, A Game About Digging A Hole Together expands the formula by allowing up to four players to work together.
Participants can coordinate their digging efforts, explore underground environments, and uncover hidden secrets while improving their equipment.
The cooperative structure introduces a social element to the original single-player concept, encouraging teamwork as players investigate increasingly deep underground areas.
The developers have also expanded the available terrain, tools, and discoveries to provide additional gameplay variety.
Original Digging Game Surpassed One Million Sales
The original A Game About Digging a Hole began as a small side project developed by a single creator over several weeks.
Despite its limited development scope, the game attracted substantial attention on Steam, eventually reaching the platform’s top 30 charts and selling more than one million copies.
Its accessible gameplay loop, built around digging, collecting resources, and upgrading equipment, helped establish a following among players interested in casual simulation and progression-based indie games.
Following that commercial success, the development team began working on a more ambitious version incorporating community-requested improvements.
Player Feedback Shapes the New Cooperative Experience
According to the developers, feedback from the original game’s community played a significant role in determining the direction of A Game About Digging A Hole Together.
The team reviewed player comments, suggestions, and requests before introducing changes to the gameplay systems.
One of the most significant additions is online cooperative multiplayer, allowing friends to participate in the excavation process together.
The developers have also focused on expanding the progression system while preserving the simple mechanics that contributed to the original game’s popularity.
Mipumi Games Rebuilds Technical Foundation for Improved Performance
Beyond the new multiplayer features, Mipumi Games has rebuilt the game’s underlying code to improve stability, performance, and reliability.
The Vienna-based development studio brings experience from both independent productions and major commercial gaming projects.
Its previous development contributions include work associated with Alan Wake 2, CONTROL, HITMAN, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
The studio’s technical experience is being applied to the expanded digging game, which now requires additional systems to support cooperative gameplay and larger environments.
Digging Technology Originated From Solarpunk Development
The game’s digging and voxel-based technology originated during an early development version of Solarpunk.
That technology eventually became the foundation for A Game About Digging a Hole, demonstrating how experimental mechanics developed for one project can evolve into a separate commercial release.
The new cooperative title continues to build on those systems, introducing additional terrain and excavation possibilities.
Rokaplay and Mipumi Games Expand Their Indie Gaming Partnership
Founded in Vienna in 2009, Mipumi Games specializes in game development, technical partnerships, and production support across PC, console, and mobile platforms.
The company has contributed to both independent titles and larger gaming productions.
Rokaplay, based in Darmstadt, Germany, focuses on developing and publishing accessible, family-friendly games across multiple platforms.
The publisher works with independent studios and emphasizes community engagement throughout development.
The collaboration brings together Mipumi’s technical expertise and rokaplay’s experience in independent game publishing.
Xbox Game Pass Launch Broadens Access to Cooperative Digging Adventure
The December 4 launch will introduce A Game About Digging A Hole Together to players across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC platforms.
Its availability through Xbox Game Pass could also introduce the title to players who did not experience the original release.
With four-player cooperative gameplay, expanded excavation mechanics, additional discoveries, and a rebuilt technical foundation, the upcoming game represents a substantial expansion of the original concept.
The December release will determine whether the simple digging formula that helped make the first game a viral success can translate into a broader multiplayer experience.
